Flying is tricky. How many ounces are allowed onboard again? Can you bring snacks? What do you do if you miss your flight?
Here at DFB, we do our best to keep you updated with all the latest travel news so you know how to best prepare for your upcoming Disney trips. Recently, there’s been some news regarding carry-on bags and personal items with Southwest Airlines that has caused quite a stir, so we’re breaking down the 7 things you should keep OUT of your carry-on and put in your personal item instead.
To be clear, a carry-on item is what you’ll store in the overhead bin and will not have easy access to during your flight. Your personal item is what will go underneath the seat in front of you that you can reach down and pull things out of while you fly.
Now that we’ve gotten that cleared up, PLEASE put these items in your personal item, NOT your carry-on bag.
Important Travel Documents
If you’re flying internationally, this could be your passport, and if you’re flying within the country, maybe it’s your driver’s license. Whichever it is, keep it in your personal item.
For that matter, keep your whole wallet in your personal item too, that way if you want to purchase something on the plane, or right when you get off, you don’t have to go digging in your carry-on for it. Plus, if you’re anxious like some of us, you’ll feel better having it right near you at all times.
A Portable Charger/Charging Cords
If your plane has charging ports, you can make sure your electronics stay charged while you fly. If they don’t though, you’ll be VERY glad you have a portable charger like a FuelRod.
And if you’re heading to Disney World, the FuelRod will really come in handy — you can swap your dead one for free fully charged one at their FuelRod Stations around the resort.
Medications
Any and all medications that you may need during your whole trip need to go in your personal item.
Even if you think you won’t need it during the flight, pack it in there anyway. If your flight gets delayed or canceled and you’ve had to unexpectedly check your bag…yeah, you can see the nightmare we’re talking about.
Headphones
Whether it’s because you plan to listen to music the whole flight, you want to watch a movie/tv show on the plane, or you just need to block out the sound of other passengers, Headphones are a must on the plane. We personally love the Apple AirPods Pro.
These bluetooth earbuds can connect to your phone in the sky, even thousands of feet up in the air! They also have a noise cancellation feature and a 6 hour battery life at a time, with a total of 30 hours if your case is fully charged.
However, if you’re worried about not being able to connect to the plane’s screens since you don’t have wired headphones (which we do recommend bringing a pair of those too, just in case), grab yourself the AirFly SE Bluetooth Wireless Audio Transmitter Receiver.
This allows your AirPods or other wireless headphones to connect to the plane’s TV screen, which is a huge game changer for those who despise using any earbuds or headphones other than their wireless ones. It has 20+ hours of battery life, meaning it can be used on even the longest flights.
Snacks
This may seem obvious, but if you’re flying to a destination where you’ve wanted to save some money by bringing snacks from home, don’t forget to pack some in your personal item too!
This way, you don’t have to buy snacks at the airport (which are always SO EXPENSIVE) and can still work on saving that money wherever you can.
A Water Bottle
If you’re heading to Disney World, you may just be tempted to pack your Water Bottle in your carry-on since you can’t bring water through TSA, but DON’T!
By packing it (empty) in your personal item, you can carry it through security, fill it up near your terminal, and then have water for the flight. Yay for not spending $6 on bottled water at the airport!
A Neck Pillow
Whether you plan on sleeping on the plane or not, sometimes those airline seats aren’t comfortable to rest your head on, so make sure you pack your Neck Pillow inside your personal item, or hanging off of it.
This pillow even comes with its own carrying case, so you don’t have to worry about the pillow getting dirty around the airport before you rest your head on it.
We’re always here to help you prepare for your next travel adventure, so stay tuned to DFB!

I pack a small, battery-operated or USB fan in personal items. Planes can be HOT before takeoff!

TSA recently confiscated my new tube of toothpaste. The box wasn’t even open yet.
