We’ve seen some pretty weird things at Disney World, but what we’re about to discuss may top the list as one of the grossest. No, we’re not talking about the squid drink, the bear in Magic Kingdom, or even the SCARY Nanny Chairs at Disney’s BoardWalk hotel. We’re talking feet.
Not everything that goes on at Disney World is pretty and perfect, and from time to time, we’ve seen some pretty gross and downright bizarre happenings. We recently posed a question to you, our readers, about some habits we’ve seen in Disney World and just how far they ranked on your personal grossness scale. Let’s see what our readers had to say!
1,841 of our readers on Instagram voted in a POLARIZING poll. (By the way, if you want to participate in the next debate, be sure to follow us @disneyfoodblog — it’s a fun time.) We asked a simple question: Do you go barefoot in Disney World water parks? To some, this may seem like a GROSS idea, while others may have no problem skipping the shoes! Let’s see what fans had to say.
On one side of the arena, we had the “Yep! I don’t see any problem with it!” crew. On the other side were the “No! This isn’t the beach.” believers. Where do YOU fall in this debate? On the one hand, that pavement can get pretty HOT in the summer, but on the other hand, not everyone likes swimming with water shoes.
The poll was pretty close for the majority of the day. In fact, it was neck-and-neck for HOURS! Ultimately, the answer was clear: 55% of our readers (1,014 voters) do NOT have a problem going barefoot at Disney World water parks. That leaves 45% (827 voters) in the pro-shoe category.
Let’s take it a step further because there is one place where people tend to feel especially opinionated in this debate. We’ve all been there, so we need to talk about it. What happens when you’re barefoot in the water park and suddenly need to use the bathroom? If your shoes are sitting all the way across the park, are you braving the bathrooms barefoot? This might strengthen the pro-shoe community’s argument, eh?
It’s a touchy subject, and it’s one that even the Disney Food Blog team is divided on. We’re dying to hear your thoughts on this debate — have you had a version of this discussion with your friends and family? Ever been stuck in a pool or water park restroom without a pair of shoes?
By the way, don’t forget that Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon water park is officially OPEN, and some exclusive H2O Glow After Hours events will be happening soon, too!

I’d be barefoot all the way. Think about it for a second – your walking back on a mix of concrete and sand – anything you might pick up on your feet in a restroom would be walked off of your feet by the time you got back to the pool. As a kid growing up on a rocky beach, we had to wear our sneakers in the water for safety (barnacles, razor clams, horseshoe and spider crabs), so as a 57 yr old woman, my choice is barefooting in the water whenever possible!

One case of plantar warts will likely sway you toward the “shoes ON” side of the debate!
Mary says
I wish I could but sadly my brother is a podiatrist and has brainwash me to the fact that planters warts grow on moist surfaces and I don’t ever want to grow them.🤮
Tracy says
I’d definitely wear water shoes at Typhoon Lagoon or Blizzard Beach. At the resort I usually wear flip flops to walk to the pool then go barefoot in the pool. I generally don’t like to be barefoot unless I’m actually swimming.
Randi Briggs says
Shoes in the bathrooms, barefoot otherwise!

If you are not going in the water at a water park you’ve wasted your money. If you are, the high amount of chlorine they use in the water will kill anything. I see no reason to wear shoes in a pool. It’s no different at a water park.
