We travel a lot in this line of work — it sort of comes with the territory.
And, because we travel often, we’ve had our fair share of less-than-stellar travel stories. Getting stuck in traffic, being forced to wait in an hours-long security line at TSA, missing our flights altogether — you name it, and it’s probably happened to someone on our team. And, the worst came true for one DFB team member when her flight had to do an emergency landing!
If you’ve ever perused the DFB pages on EPCOT festivals, read our newsletter, or read the DFB Guide, then you’ve seen the fruits of our team member, Traci’s, labor. And, while she’s incredibly hard-working, all that hard work couldn’t save her from being faced with an emergency landing on a flight! We’re sharing what happened so you know what to expect if it ever happens to you.
On a flight from Detroit to Orlando, the crew made an announcement relatively soon into the flight that there was a medical emergency on board that would require the plane to make an emergency landing in Cincinnati.
About 45 minutes into the flight, the plane landed and once it was at the gate, paramedics boarded to assist the sick person and helped them off the plane. But then, the plane sat there for what Traci said felt like “forever.”
Eventually, after an hour, the crew made an announcement that they could soon depart for Orlando, but there was very little communication from them beforehand, so folks on the plane just had to sit and wait with no information.
Once the plane did depart, it was relatively uneventful other than being hours later than originally planned. The airline also didn’t do anything in the way of compensating passengers other than thanking them for their patience.
Ultimately, Traci ended up losing quite a bit of time on her Disney World trip, though she hoped everything ended up being alright with the passenger who needed medical attention.
Just keep in mind that if you’re ever faced with being in a similar situation, the flight attendants and crew have been trained to deal with emergencies like this and will do their best to keep you safe and informed when it’s necessary.

On a flight from Dubai to Atlanta we medically diverted to Frankfurt. We too were on the ground for a very long time. Flight attendants told me they had to refuel the aircraft, empty lav tanks, re cater the plane, file a new flight plan, and wait for a gate to be open once we arrived in Atlanta from Frankfurt. A lot of things I never would have thought about. I’m glad I spoke to the flight attendants in the galley before we departed Frankfurt. It made our 2 hrs on the ground a little more understandable. Still, a 15 1/2 hour flight extended by almost 3 hrs…not fun, but at least I wasn’t in an ambulance heading to an ER in a foreign country!

We had a cabin electrical fire and landed in the middle of the desert at an air force base after a sharp nose dive to breathing altitude.
A replacement plane landed and everyone got on it. Everyone.
