Disney World has so many great options for snacks and meals!
As we say, food is a theme park! From beloved dining spots like ‘Ohana and favorite snacks like corn dog nuggets with plastic cheese from Casey’s Corner, many Disney World foodies can get behind loving these iconic places to eat, but there are some meals that fans can’t stop fighting about. Some snacks and meals are not everyone’s cup of tea, and Disney World has some questionable items on some of their menus.
Menus at places like Galaxy’s Edge and Pandora have many experimental foods on the menu, and some fans love them, while others despise them. However, it is not just in these lands that controversial snacks and meals can be found. Here are 8 questionable Disney World meals that some fans find a little too weird.
Ocean Moon Bowl
In Animal Kingdom at Pandora, you can find Satu’li Canteen. While the menu options here have different takes on food, like one of our favorites, Cheeseburger Pods, not all of these menu items sound super appetizing.
The Ocean Moon Bowl already sounds questionable from its name, but it is the blue noodles that do it for us. Along with the blue noodles, this bowl also features tuna, watermelon radish, pickled daikon, rainbow carrots, avocado, cucumbers, red cabbage, Miso, and sweet soy sauce, topped off with cilantro.
Whew! We are out of breath after listing off on the ingredients featured in that bowl! The thought of blue noodles and tuna together does not really sit well. While the blue noodles add to the theme of the ocean, it does not sound appetizing, but this bowl is super pretty! It was also shockingly delicious, and the ingredients work well together. If colored food and tuna are not your thing, you may want to skip out on this one.
Pongu Lumpia
Also in Pandora, you can find Pongu Pongu, and if you blink you honestly might miss this spot! It is home to a very controversial Disney snack and that it the Pongu Lumpia.
Pongu Lumpia is a spring roll stuffed with fluffy cream cheese and pineapple. The outside is flakey and toasted, which makes the inside warm.
We understand why this snack is controversial, as some may not like the gooey texture or the unique flavor. This snack also seems like it would be good to walk with, but due to its gooey filling, it does not travel well. So if you were looking for a snack to take with you while you wait for Flight of Passage or Na’vi River Journey, the Pongu Lumpia is not it.
Iced Blue Felucian Shrimp Cocktail
While we know that the Star Wars Galatic Starcruiser has taken its last voyage, we still want to talk about a very interesting dish that used to be served here.
The Starcruiser had many interesting dishes and even had Blue and Green Milk on tap! The Iced Blue Felucian Shrimp Cocktail used to be featured on the “Taste Around the Galaxy” menu, where you would get to try different dishes inspired by planets in the Star Wars universe.
The shrimp was served on dry ice and would come out smoking. The blue color comes from soaking the shrimp in a butterfly pea powder solution, which is a natural ingredient.
When we tried this, we did not really like it. Two out of the three reporters who tried it did not care for shrimp, and the third who likes shrimp also did not care for it. While it was just shrimp dyed blue, the combination of the other foods featured on the dish, along with that eye-catching blue color, just made this dish a pass for us.
Popcorn at Kat Saka’s Kettle
Sticking with a Star Wars theme, you can get popcorn at Kat Saka’s Kettle in Galaxy’s Edge. This popcorn stand is not like one you would find on Main Street that sells classic Disney World popcorn, instead, Kat Saka’s Kettle serves unique flavors of popcorn.
Here, you can find the Outpost Popcorn Mix, which is a mix of colorful popcorn with sweet and spicy flavors.,
The sweet purple popcorn has a sort of “fruity” quality to it, as the red popcorn has a chili flavor that is savory. The sweet and savory tastes help balance this mix out.
Some members of our team have a love-hate relationship with this mix and sometimes crave it and at other times avoid it. If you are adventurous and are tired of the classic Disney World snacks, then this may be a good option for you!
Shrimp Beignet Po’ Boy
For now, there is only one place you can get Mickey Beignets at Disney World, and sadly, they are not found in the parks. Instead, you can head to Disney’s Port Orleans French Quarter. Here, you can pick up classic Mickey Beignets as well as Beignet sandwiches!
The sandwich can be found over at Scat Cat’s Club which is a lounge at the resort. You can try the Shrimp Beignet Po’ Boy, which is a beignet filled with fried shrimp, lettuce, tomato, Cajun rémoulade, and house-made pickles. It even comes with a side of chips.
Now, the idea of mixing a desert with seafood may sound a little gross, and we are right there with you, except this pairing is surprisingly good. You would think that using a beignet as a bun would be overkill, but it was not covered in powdered sugar, so it was more of a fluffy bun. The shrimp is also juicy and crispy. Adding the veggies, it helps make the sandwich seem lighter and not all fried.
This meal is one that we understand might sound a little questionable, but it is actually worth the try!
Jackfruit Options
Disney seems to be adding more and more Jackfruit options. Jackfruit is used as a substitute for meat and is often seen in plant-based dishes.
For example, at Whispering Canyon Cafe at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge, the Plant-based Skillet comes with Maple-Chipotle Barbecued Jackfruit. This is supposed to be a meat substitute, but we personally wish it would stay off the menu.
Sometimes, Jackfruit can have a bitter flavor and is not always seasoned well, which always reminds us that we are eating a fruit that is disguised as meat.
While Jackfruit can help expand the menu for plant-based eaters, the plant-based eaters on our team don’t even enjoy it. We try to avoid it.
Turkey Leg
If you have been following DFB for a while, you know that the infamous Turkey Leg is not well-liked, but it is also an iconic staple of the Disney Parks. Nothing says “magic,” like carrying around a giant leg of meat.
These Turkey Legs are huge and can be shared with multiple people. The meat is very smokey, so if you do not like the flavor of smoked meat, you will want to sit this one out. It can also be hard to finish this because it is so big.
While this snack is not for us, some people cannot go on a trip without getting one, as Disney sells 2 million pounds of Turkey Legs a year.
We love to try all the new snacks and meal that Disney World puts out, and while sometimes the names sound a little adventurous, we are often surprised on just how good these dishes turn out!
