Disneyland has seen a ton of changes already. Last year, a newly updated ToonTown reopened, Tarzan’s Treehouse became Adventureland Treehouse, Haunted Mansion closed to get an updated queue area, and Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is under construction. But a huge $1.9 billion expansion is also coming to the park, which means new rides, lands, restaurants, and more!

What is this expansion?

In 2021, Disney introduced DisneylandForward, an initiative that would have the company working with the city of Anaheim to use its existing Disneyland property to make way for new lands, rides, restaurants, hotels, and more. Basically, Disney needs the City of Anaheim’s approval to rezone certain parts of its lands to make that happen.

The Anaheim City Council met to review and vote on Disney’s proposal for the expansion on April 16th. That plan was approved, but a second vote is required at the Council’s next meeting on May 7th. However, all signs seem to suggest that the City will issue that final approval, which means Disney can move forward with the expansion.

What new lands could this expansion bring to Disneyland?

Disney has been very specific with the kinds of lands it would possibly like to bring to Disneyland. Disney has proposed projects themed after Coco, Black Panther, Tangled, Frozen, Zootopia, Peter Pan, Tron, and Toy Story.

The company has also referenced new lands in its international parks, including the new Zootopia land at Shanghai Disney Resort, World of Frozen at Hong Kong Disneyland, and Rapunzel’s Forest opening at TokyoDisneySea later this year. Disney has also already released concept art for a possible Avatar-themed land in Disneyland.

What else could this expansion bring to Disneyland?

In addition to new lands, the biggest thing the expansion could bring to Disneyland is more attractions. If new lands are added to Disneyland, we could expect new attractions themed to those lands. But that’s not all. Those new lands would also potentially have new restaurants and shops, too.

Another thing that Disneyland wants to expand is its lodging options. Currently, Disneyland only has three on-site hotels, although the Disneyland Hotel just got some brand new DVC villas and Paradise Pier Hotel was recently re-themed to Pixar Place Hotel.

Where will all this new stuff go?

Disneyland only has so much property to work with, so expansion has been tricky in the past. But with the City of Anaheim’s approval, it can add all of these new things without the constraints of land obstacles and zoning restrictions. The primary focus is on locations west of Disneyland Drive and the current Toy Story parking lot. Disneyland would, of course, enhance parking for visitors and Cast Members by adding a new transportation center.

So Disney will not be purchasing any new land — the plan is to modify land that it already owns.
