We LOVE Cast Members! They work so hard to make our time at Disney World as special as possible, and we could never thank them enough!
Cast Members often work long hours in all weather conditions, and they also often on holidays and weekends. They are one of the reasons that Disney World is such a special place, but did you know that they have some rules they must follow on how they look?
Cast Members must follow something called the “Disney Look Book,” which lays out how a cast member must present themselves on stage. Many frontline Cast Members have specific costumes they must wear, but there are also a few rules about body modifications that must be followed. The guidelines for how Cast Members look have changed over the years, but there are still four major rules that Cast Members must obey.
Body Alterations
While Cast Members can have ear piercings, other body modifications such as tongue piercings, tongue splitting, tooth filing, earlobe expansion, or disfiguring skin implants are not allowed. Disney does not want a physical effect that “disfigures, deforms or similarly detracts from a professional image.”
While Cast Members may be a bit limited on the piercings they can have, we have still seen some adorable earrings being worn by Cast Members. We have seen dinosaur earrings on a Cast Member working at DINOSAUR, and ghost earrings worn by a Haunted Mansion Cast Member, just to name a few.
Tattoos
While we have seen Disney become more lenient on the tattoo policy for Cast Members in recent years. There are still a few rules they must follow. First, Cast Members cannot have tattoos on their face, head, or neck. They are allowed tattoos in other visible places as long as the tattoo is no larger than the Cast Member’s hand and is family friendly. They cannot have tattoos that depict nudity, offensive or inappropriate language or images, or violate any of Disney’s company policies.
This guideline is one that has changed a fair amount in recent years. Previously Cast Members could not have any tattoos visible while working. However, now Cast Members are able to display their body art within certain limitations.
Nails
Cast Members must have good personal hygiene and make sure their nails are kept clean. They must keep them short, not exceeding one-fourth of an inch beyond the fingertip. If a Cast Member wishes to paint their nails, they must use the same solid color on each nail or have a French manicure style. Unfortunately, no decals or charms are allowed to be added to their nails.
While we may not be seeing any neon multi-colored nails on Cast Members anytime soon, they can add a bit of solid color to their nails and still be within Disney guidelines.
Hair Style
Lastly, there are also rules about the hair styles allowed for Cast Members. While the Cast Member can choose whatever length hair they want, if they want to change the color, there are a few guidelines. Hair color needs to be maintained and be in a naturally occurring hue. No blues, greens, pinks, purples or similar colors that would not look natural. Cast Members can shave lines and shapes into their hair as long as the design is not offensive or against company policy.
We will always appreciate Cast Members and all they do to make our vacations magical and memorable. These are just a few of the rules that Cast Members must follow, but it is always interesting to see some of the inner workings of how Disney World operates.

Considering the aesthetic and vibe of “turn of the century Victoriana” on Main Street USA, I really appreciate the wholesome grooming guidelines of prior years at WDW annd DL. Everyone is entitled to their own style, but if you want to rock red lipstick, black eyeliner or major tattoos, maybe working for Disney is not the right choice for you.

I appreciate Disney’s rules. That’s why I prefer WDW to Universal.
