Disney parks are where we’ve spotted some of the most unhinged things that are now living rent-free in our minds, and we don’t know whether we love it or absolutely hate it. On occasion, Disney is known to come up with some weird and outrageous ideas to keep upping the wow factor on their rides, entertainment, and even souvenirs.
You’d think by now we’d be used to all of the unhinged things Disney comes up with, but they’ve found a way to up their ante once more!
One of the most unhinged things we’ve seen Disney dream up in a long time just debuted at Disneyland Paris. This new spin on the classic tale of Alice In Wonderland began on May 25th, 2024. Disneyland Paris teased that you can “fall down the rabbit hole” while watching the new high-energy show named “Alice & the Queen of Hearts: Back to Wonderland.” The show is set to run for a limited time through September 29th, 2024.
This show features a series of musical performances, aerial acrobatics, and BMX stunts throughout their immersive theatrical adaptation. The show performs at Walt Disney Studios Park and offers “a different twist” on that pivotal, final croquet game scene between Alice and the Queen of Hearts.
While you’re experiencing the show, you’ll not only be able to witness the exciting face-off between these two classic characters, but you might even find yourself influencing the outcome of the show during the finale!
The stage is themed by a “pop art” movement with nods to many of the scenes and places that Alice explores in the original film and storyline. These elements, which are inspired by pop and street art culture, are accentuated by street murals, flashy colors, and industrial elements added to make this the largest stage measuring over 220 feet long! In addition to the over-the-top theming, the stage includes 13 screens framing its center to draw your eye to the middle of the action!
An original stage isn’t all that’s new for this show, though! New original music helps bring the show to life, featuring five new original songs inspired by the songs in the classic film. The new songs reflect Alice’s cheerful personality by matching her with joyful pop stylings while the Queen of Hearts’ villain persona inspired a classic rock take to her world showcasing her self-confidence!
Throughout the show, you’ll also see a few other familiar characters like Mad Hatter, the Caterpillar, the March Hare, and the White Rabbit who will also be moving the storyline along through songs accompanied by live musicians. You’ll also want to listen to the unique ways Disney Imagineers thought to bring those industrial sounds to life!
This show is packed with some mad talent, too! Viewers will be treated to exhilarating performances including acrobats that make use of seven (yes, SEVEN) trampolines on stage, which include trampoline walls for aerial acrobatics. You’ll want to be mindful of where you sit because some of those trampolines are situated right at the foot of the bleachers, giving you a chance to be as close to the action as possible. You won’t just see acrobats, through. BMX riders will jump through the air, performing tricks across the stage to the music! We can’t help but get Lights, Motors, Action! vibes from what this sounds like).
As we mentioned before, the audience can play a big role in the outcome of this show. During “Alice & the Queen of Hearts: Back to Wonderland,” there’ll be an opportunity to cheer as loud as possible in support of your favorite team between Alice and the Queen Of Hearts. So there’s a chance that, if you see this show multiple times, you could end up with very different endings.
Oh, and we haven’t had a chance to talk about the most unhinged part of this show yet — the costumes! The Disneyland Paris costume design teams worked alongside several local workshops to help costume designers bring their visions to reality. Alice’s look was represented by a pop star-inspired design, while the Queen of Hearts was paired with a glamorous outfit matching the bold nature of her classic, rock-inspired music! The team also was tasked with designing, creating, and bringing to life another twenty modern costume designs for other performers in the show like singers, dancers, and musicians, whose aesthetics all had to match the style of the décor on stage.
Ok, seriously — we’re kind of digging the unhinged nature of this show now! If you want to experience this show for yourself, you’ll need to make plans to see it soon as it’s only in Disneyland Paris for a limited time.
