We’ve got some bad news to deliver…A wildly popular Marvel show is about to be no more.
Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure opened in 2021 and the Doctor Strange: Mysteries of the Mystic Arts show has been part of the land since Day 1. However, it appears that its run is about to end soon, and there may be some hidden reasons behind the closing.
According to The Orange County Register and Disneyland officials, Doctor Strange: Mysteries of the Mystic is set to have its final shows on June 30th, 2024 before closing for good.
The show is no longer featured on Disneyland’s website and has been replaced with a page dedicated to the Ancient Sanctum, the area where the Doctor Strange show took place. With that said, the Disneyland entertainment calendar still shows six performances scheduled for June 30th.
The Doctor Strange: Mysteries of the Mystic Arts show featured the titular character performing magic in front of a standing-room-only crowd. During the show, he would train recruits (the audience) in the ways of the mystic arts and use a magical portal to pull Marvel heroes and villains — such as Thor, Captain Marvel, and America Chavez — into the Ancient Sanctum.
Now, the Ancient Sanctum website is described by Disney as a place to “explore the ruins of a mysterious ancient sanctum and learn the site’s secrets from Doctor Strange.” It appears that the area will continue to exist as new entertainment offerings are evaluated. However, Disney did note that “Dr. Strange will continue to encounter guests throughout the campus.”
This closure comes on the heels of the removal of the live DJ and dancers from the limited-time Club Pixar show and the unionization of Disneyland character performers.
The vote to unionize passed the proposal on May 18th, and Actors’ Equity Association President Kate Shindle said of the employees, “They’re the human beings who create lifelong memories when your kids hug a character, or when your family watches a parade roll by the castle. The next step will be to collaborate with them about improving health & safety, wages, benefits, working conditions and job security.”
Of course, speculation has arisen as to whether the unionization led to the cancellation of these shows, but we may never know for certain. It’s also possible that Doctor Strange: Mysteries of the Mystic Arts could potentially return after union negotiations are complete, but that remains to be seen.

Randi Briggs says
Count on the shows and appearances degrading with the entry of the union. Unions only care about dues not people or experiences. The characters always had the freedom to find another job, they didn’t have to work there. No one was forcing them to work there.
