We’ve got great news for fans of The Lion King — and no, it’s not new merchandise your wallet will hate you for buying (this time)!
We’ve known that the new Mufasa film has been on the way for a while now, getting ready to hit theaters on July 5th, 2024. You can also check out a trailer for that new film right here before you grab your tickets, but did you know the original The Lion King movie is getting ready to hit a MASSIVE milestone? It’s getting ready to return to theaters to celebrate its 30th anniversary!
That’s right! The Lion King is returning on July 12th, 2024, to select theaters around the country!

Now, this won’t be any special edition of the film — it’s the same Disney Animated film you saw 30 years ago (and probably many times since then), but it’s a fantastic way to rekindle your love for the classic film or maybe introduce your kids to it for the first time!
To see if your theater is participating, check your local movie theater listings closer to the beginning of July to see if the film will be showing starting on July 12th. It hasn’t been announced how long these special screenings will be available, and it’s likely to be dependant on each theater individually.
If you’re around Disney World and are looking for ways to celebrate The Lion King’s anniversary, you can head over to Art of Animation to check out the Lion King section!
You can also head over to Animal Kingdom to shop for Lion King merchandise, watch the Festival of the Lion King show, or ride Kilimanjaro Safaris to get a look at real lions!

I saw the original film free as a premiere showing 30 years ago at the cinema. I then got it on VHS. Later when the box set of 3 DVDs was released I got that & the first film had, by then, got an additional song added about the daily news sung by Zsa Zsu.
