If you’re traveling this summer, you may need to book some plane tickets and take a trip to the airport.
On any given day, there is a lot happening at the airport and around the world that could impact your trip, and that’s why we keep you updated with all the latest news. A recent unexpected plane maneuver on a Southwest Airlines flight has brought federal officials in to investigate.
According to AP News, on May 25th, a Southwest Airlines flight on a Boeing 737 Max was flying from Phoenix to Oakland, California. During the flight, the plane went into what’s called a “Dutch roll” — a maneuver described as “the combination of a yawing motion when the tail slides and the plane rocks from wingtip to wingtip.” The name comes from mimicking the movement of a Dutch ice skater.
Pilots are trained to recover from this roll, and the Southwest pilots were able to land safely in Oakland with no injuries reported from the 175 passengers and six crew members on board. According to a preliminary report by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), when an inspection was conducted after the plane landed, officials found that a unit that provides backup power to the rudder was damaged.
It is not clear right now if the damage to this unit caused the Dutch roll or when the damage took place (before or during the flight). The incident is still under investigation, and no other airlines have reported the same issue.

Flying has gotten crazy these days. With whacked out people, planes that are horribly underserviced due to a lack of technicians for aircraft, worst turbulance we’ve ever had due to climate change, and the monopoly that aircraft makers have in our country, Getting on a plane is more and more scary each time!
I bet this freaked out a whole bunch of people, I can’t imagine they’re flying again soon after their trips, so glad they’re safe!
