Perks at Disney World are a great thing, right?
We love a good Disney World hotel perk whether it is early entry into the parks, discounts on merch or food, or even more. That reminds us of the perks that we’ve lost over the past years, specifically of one free hotel luggage perk that disappeared from Disney World and how we’re still not over it!
What was the perk we were talking about? Great question. So, it was one of the lesser-known perks you used to get at the Disney World hotels — the humble luggage scale. In the grand scheme of things, it was a small perk, but boy was it handy. It’s been gone for a while, and honestly, we’re still not over it.
So what’s the deal with this perk? Well, picture this. You’ve spent a whole week at Disney World and you’ve bought all kinds of souvenirs (ears, pins, plushies, and maybe even a droid from Galaxy’s Edge), and now your suitcase is looking like it’s bursting at the seams.
Now, the last thing we need is a surprise at the airport like an overweight luggage fee. This is where the luggage scale at the resort came in handy because it allowed you to weigh your bags before heading to the airport, which ultimately spared you from having to shuffle stuff around in front of a line of impatient travelers.
But nowadays you won’t find the scales as they have vanished right along with the resort airline check-in counters. In case you missed it, Disney World used to have these counters where you could check your luggage right there at the hotel. It was kind of like a TSA pre-check. They’d even take your luggage to the airport for you. Alas, those days are gone, and with them, the luggage scales.
So what are we to do now? You could try the old “hold your luggage and step on the bathroom scale” trick, but maybe a lot of us don’t want to know our weight after all the vacation churros. Plus, bathroom scales aren’t exactly the most precise for weighing our suitcases.
A better thing to do is to pack a portable luggage scale like this one you can find on Amazon. It’ll take out all of the guesswork.
While it’s not the same as the hotel scale, it’ll save you some stress and potentially some money.
Also, who knows? Maybe one day Disney World will bring back the scales and the resort airline check-in, and we can all breathe a collective sigh of relief.
That was a quick look back at an underrated Disney hotel perk, and we’d love to hear about your experience with it. Until then, we’ll keep bringing you all the latest updates from Disney World, so keep it right here at DFB for that and more!

We only used this once from what I recall, and it was a fabulous perk for us on that visit. Maybe this is the ultimate obvious statement, but I’m assuming that the Magical Express ran the guests AND the airline checked luggage (without the accompanying guests) to the airport. Since Magical Express is no more, I’m assuming that Disney has no (existing) way of getting the luggage to the airport anymore. I wonder if this is something that the services that started running the ‘paid magical express’ service would be interested in partnering with Disney to provide. Disney might see that as more complication than it’s worth, though, at least for themselves. It’s a shame. We drive now, which has meant a switch to longer trips less often, and one of the ‘perks’ of that approach is that we can be *almost* as indulgent with the souvenir shopping as we want to be. I’m sure if we were still flying, we would have used this perk more.

Publix has a scale to weight luggage. It is located new the entrance and exit doors . Just found this out in May. I tend to over pack and forget my scale.

When our kids flew down to join us at Ft Wilderness…on departure day, the cm’s used the scale to weigh and tag each piece of luggage which was then loaded onto a truck. The guests boarded the Magical Express bus to get to the airport The luggage was offloaded at the airport from the truck and checked in by cm’s. Wow! What service. Not everyone on the bus got this service, though. I forget why.

Wow. We have not been to WDW since 2018 and plan on going 2025 for my mom’s 85th- this is the first I am hearing no more scales!!! I actually planned to Ck in a second suitcase for overload and souvenirs!!! I am really disappointed they discontinued having souvenirs sent to room. We have 3 Seniors and if anything that will deter us from buying a lot since we will have to carry it around. It’s too much walking to get back to a locker before heading to the hotel. I hated no more Magic You way- it took a lot of the Magic away! It made it just so EZ!!! Thanks for keeping us updated- we try to watch all your blogs on UTUBE- we love to hear updates from you!!

Of everything that disappeared during Covid the luggage service is what we miss most. It was so nice to put the tag on your luggage and check it at your home airport then the next time you saw it was in your room. Then on departure day just take it to the airline checkin at the resort and no more luggage until you got back home to your home airport. I really wish they would bring that back.
