It’s been a few days since a massive IT outage caused problems across the world on July 19th.
Those problems were most evident at major airports, including Orlando International Airport, where the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a ground stop. This resulted in numerous flight delays. Now, several days later, some airlines are still struggling to get their planes in the air due to the issue.
The issue was due to a security update to CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity solution used by businesses around the world. The security update caused technical issues that globally impacted IT systems, including the systems used by U.S. Airlines. Thousands of flights were ultimately delayed, with many canceled. Those problems still seem to be continuing. According to CNN, more than 1,000 flights have been canceled as airlines struggle to recover from the massive IT outage.
At Orlando International Airport, over 140 flights are delayed, and more than 50 have been canceled, according to FlightAware. Delta Airlines seems to be struggling the most with 46% of its flights delayed into and out of the airport and 21% of its flights canceled. Overall, Delta has seen over 600 cancellations so far throughout the U.S. The airline issued the following statement: “Additional cancellations are expected as some of Delta’s technology continues to recover from Friday morning’s vendor-caused issue.”
According to FlightAware, over 21,000 flights are currently delayed with over 1,200 having been canceled. So if you’re flying today, you’ll want to make sure make sure you have a way to get notifications from your airport and airline. Sign up for text alerts, if you can, and make sure you have notifications turned on in your airline’s app to keep updated on the status of your flight.
Crowdstrike CEO George Kurtz apologized to customers and informed them that a fix has released, but it could still take some time to get things back in working order, so these delays and cancellations could continue to impact flights over the next few days.
