Are you ready for the big changes coming to Disney World on July 24th?
Disney recently announced that Genie+ is basically going away to be replaced with Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Lightning Lane Single Pass. However, this is way more than just a name change. A lot MORE is changing with the Lightning Lane system, too. We’re going to go through two rule changes that you’ll need to know about the new system and how they could affect your next trip.
Okay, on July 24th, the new system will go into place. You’ll be able to purchase Lightning Lane Multi Pass ahead of your trip plus make three Lightning Lane selections early: seven days if you’re staying at a Disney World hotel or three days if you’re staying elsewhere. The selections are based on a tiered system, so you’ll be able to choose one selection from Tier 1 rides and then two selections from the list of Tier 2 rides or three selections from the Tier 2 ride list. You can check out the full tiers here.
That means that some of the previous rules for Genie+ are also changing, including the rules for park hopping.
The Park Hopping Rule
You WILL still be able to use Lightning Lane Multi Pass when park hopping, but you’ll have to physically scan into your first park and use a Lightning Lane selection there before you can choose a selection at another park. From what Disney has said, you probably also won’t be able to modify selections until you’ve scanned into your first park.
Here’s the official language from Disney about that: “When you purchase a Lightning Lane Multi Pass for a theme park, you’ll be prompted to choose up to 3 multi-pass experiences and arrival windows in the same theme park. Once you redeem a selection on the day of your park visit, you can use the My Disney Experience app to choose another multi-pass experience in any Walt Disney World theme park (subject to availability), as long as you have a valid ticket with the Park Hopper option or an Annual Pass. The ability to visit another park is subject to the park’s capacity limitations.”
This Small Print CHANGES EVERYTHING About Disney World’s New Lightning Lane Multi Pass
The 120-Minute Rule
Currently with Genie+, you can only book one ride at a time. However, you can make a selection after two hours (120 minutes) even if you have not yet scanned into your previous selection. However, that’s going away with Lightning Lane Multi-Pass.
However, you’ll be able to have up to three Lightning Lane selections at any given time, so you no longer need the 120-minute rule.

Of course, there might be some more changes we haven’t seen yet and won’t know about until the new system goes into effect on July 24th. We’ll be keeping an eye on the situation and trying it out, so stay tuned to DFB for more.

I realize it’s a typo but the date of changes is listed as June 24th a couple of times.
