It’s Olympics season, baby!

If you’re like us, you’ve probably been obsessing over the Olympics this year! We’ve watched countless TikToks that show the lives of the Olympians behind the scenes and we’ve been tuned in to our favorite events throughout the past few weeks. But after watching all those sports, we have some questions…specifically about how some of the athletes’ equipment gets to Paris!
Apparently, we’re not the only ones with some serious inquiries, and according to NBC, Swedish pole vaulter Mondo Duplantis often gets asked this question. Duplantis took home a gold medal for pole vaulting this year, and many have asked him how he transports his 17-foot poles to the Olympics.

Duplantis has shared that he first has to find flights that are able to store his bag of poles, and then he has to pay the associated oversized bag fees. However, the real trick is carrying that bag through the airport! “It’s very difficult to travel with them,” Duplantis said. “When I’m in the airport, I’m just yelling, ‘Excuse me!’ like the whole time…And everybody’s just so confused. They think it might be skis, but (the bag) is like 20 feet long.”

Duplantis also noted that he’s usually the “center of attention” when he walks into the airport with the sticks. We can only imagine!

So if you wanted a little bit of behind-the-scenes info about how athletes transport their equipment, there you go! Most of the Olympians can get by with duffel bags and suitcases, but those pole vaulters really have a time of it when it comes to traveling!
