D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event was filled with TONS of excitement, we still can’t believe some of the news!
There are so many new attractions coming to Disney World and Disneyland, as well as the international parks, and one of the largest announcements was that a new Monsters Inc. land is coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios! But here’s the thing — Hollywood Studios isn’t THAT big of a park (as it stands, it’s the second smallest next to Magic Kingdom), so it’s extremely likely that this new land will take the place of an existing attraction in the park. And Muppets fans, we need to warn you that it could be very bad news for Muppets Courtyard.
Now, to preface, NOTHING has been confirmed about where this new Monsters Inc. land will go in the parks! However, from the concept art of the new land, there are a few sections of the park that it could fit into. The first theory fans have is that it could replace Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster and Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy over in Sunset Boulevard.
However, the concept art doesn’t reaaally look like this area, if we’re being honest (but it could still happen). Another common assumption has been that it could be placed in Animation Courtyard, which would take the place of Disney Junior Play and Dance! and/or Star Wars Launch Bay.
Again though, we’re skeptical that this concept art matches this area. Concept art can always change, yes, but…*sigh* if we’re being honest with ourselves, we have to admit what the concept art really looks like — it looks like it’s smack dab in the middle of Muppets Courtyard.
We know, we know, we don’t want to admit it either, but it’s time to face the unfortunate truth that it’s entirely possible we could need to say goodbye to Muppets Courtyard, which consists of PizzeRizzo and MuppetVision 3D (as well as Mama Melrose’s) when construction begins on this new land in 2026. And since the new land appears to be so large, it could take away Star Tours and Backlot Express as well.
That does mean that we still have over a year to still experience Muppets Courtyard IF Disney does announce that this is where Monstropolis will be going! And the same can be said for any attractions that will be getting cut for this new land. While we’re excited to see this new land come to life, we still have a LONG time until we see it come to fruition, so nothing is changing anytime soon. You can still go see Sam Eagle’s glorious 3 hour finale that had to be cut down to a minute and a half.

Disney just renovated the Muppet theater but, on the other hand, Disney just reimagined The Little Mermaid show. Which is short lived? I understand the love for the Muppets but PizzeRizzo and Mama Melrose are two of the worst restaurants on Disney property. Bye! Of course, if that area is selected for Monsters they might remove Star Tours which Disney may want to do. It’s located so close to Galaxy’s Edge unlike Disneyland where Star Tours is on opposite sides of the park from Galaxy’s Edge. I believe the Animation Courtyard and Muppet area will both be replaced over time.

OK seriously? Look at a satellite view on any maps program. The northwest section of Hollywood Studios only has support buildings for the long-closed production companies. They’re all empty buildings and parking lots. It’s a pretty good bet in the giant parking lot between Toy Story and the Brown Derby. There is literally nothing there and no parking is needed any longer because no production is being done.
John Hyde says
REGULATORS! We ride at Dawn!
DJ Moves says
Oh no! I was already annoyed we were getting another IP-specific land, but to erase the Muppets to do it?!
Kate says
if you look at the map the area of Indiana Jones show is a huge space that could accommodate Monsters inc. Plus, do they now need an Indiana Jones show in HS and the ride in AK?
Chris says
The idea of concept art is this the vision of the area when it is built. Not how it looks today. It very well could be the bad choice of booting muppets but we’ll have to wait and see.
Jayne says
We come from Pennsylvania to Disney once or twice a year. It’s always a treat to have something there we haven’t seen before. I like the Muppets but it’s time for something new.
Bob Romeo says
I’m already no thrilled about loosing Rivers of America and the Liberty boat please don’t take Muppet 3D too!
Tom Welsh says
I know I don’t get a vote, but I’d dump Lightning McQueen to protect Muppet 3-D. The Muppets, however, could use a new show.
Coral Schober says
I have a serious problem with The Muppets going away!!! If anyone out there has watched “Jim Henson: Idea Man”, then you will understand where I am coming from! Jim Henson sold the Muppets to Disney because he felt that it was the “right fit” and best way to keep the Muppets alive for future generations. I watched Sesame Street for a brief while as a child. I watched The Muppet Show with my father ALL THE TIME, even in reruns before he died. I watched Fraggle Rock with my children. My daughter and I love The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth! Walt Disney and Jim Henson are the real reason that we have the Animatronics that we have today and Jim Henson’s legacy and contributions to that, and to education of our children needs to be saved for future generations!!!! Leave Muppetvision 3D ALONE!!!!!
Tracy says
There’s a huge empty space between Toy Story Land and Rock’n Roller Coaster (behind Star Wars Launch Bay). That would be the most logical space to put a Monster’s Inc Land, especially considering that building there would have a minimal impact on existing park operations. I sincerely hope that Disney “Imagineers” aren’t so lacking in imagination that the only way they can add an attraction to the park is by taking one away.
GL Josh says
First the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island for Cars Land Mid-west (but on the east coast) and now (possibly) Muppets for Monsters. If only there were some underdeveloped areas within the confines of the parks.
Tammy says
I’m hoping for Animation Courtyard. It’s a big area and could still leave Little Mermaid. Disney Junior could be moved or just closed. Would really hate to see it on Sunset Boulevard or Muppets Courtyard. We need more attractions, not replace existing ones.
Lois Pierce says
It’s my understanding that the final decision where to put the Monsters Inc. land has not been made and that Animation Courtyard is still very much in the running. As I love both MupprtVision3D and Star Tours, I’m really rooting for the Animation Courtyard location. I’ve never been to the Disney Junior show, but I would think that could easily be moved to the old Who wants to be a Millionaire stage. And who’s going to miss a show (Little Mermaid) that has been running for 5 years?
Lois Pierce says
Hasn’t been running.
Kenpec says
And then there is the parking lots. One multilevel parking garage simular to what is at Disney Springs could open up a lot of ground space for expansion.
Todd says
If Monsters is going into the Muppet space, then the animation courtyard area should be reimagined for the Muppets. The courtyard was great when the park opened and it was a working studio, but at this point it’s pretty much a joke and is prime for some new ideas.
Lucretia Kleinman says
It’s time the Muppets went. I’ve seen that show a hundred times. I like the Muppets, but maybe feature them in a gift shop. You CANNOT get rid of Rock N Roller coaster! And I can’t believe they’ll get rid of Star Tours. I am looking forward to Monsters Inc. and I hope it takes a lot of space with a lot of stuff to do!
RM says
Launch Bay would be the IDEAL spot for Monsters Inc. Land. Period. The space is NOT being well utilized presently, while ALSO sitting on PRIME real estate …. located JUST past the iconic archway?! Imagine how nice it would look to see the facade of the new Monsters Inc. building rising right behind the arch?! The Little Mermaid theater wouldn’t need to be bulldozed either, as you can start the building exactly on the site of Launch Bay.
WHY demo a whole themed (Muppet) court area, when ALL you REALLY need is to make a NEW Muppets film, hopefully also in 3-D & BOOM! You basically have a BRAND NEW attraction and all you REALLY did was change the movie. Hey, I love the Muppets movie like the next person, BUUUUUUUT c’mon now??! They have been showing the SAME movie for THIRTY YEARS now. It’s very cute & all ….. & I go and watch it EVERY time I visit DHS, but it’s TIME to replace it with a NEW movie. OK, Josh D’Amaro??!
I DON’T understand why they would bulldoze this entire area & bury Monsters Inc. land back there, while leaving the pathetic Launch Bay area intact ….. all the while continuing to use up an EXCELLENT location in the park, while also contributing (practically) nothing to the park goers experience in DHS.
naturaldisastergirl says
I seriously hope it doesn’t involve shutting down the Muppet courtyard area, or any of the other existing HS attractions for that matter. There is PLENTY of unused/disused space that they could put Monstropolis in. There is too little at Hollywood Studios as it is! And I know Mama Melrose’s is not popular with some people, but the reality is that it is always packed and a much-needed option in the table service desert that is HS. I knew there would be ‘catches’ and other shoes to drop about these park ‘expansions’… it’s not an “expansion” if they’re killing active attractions (probably for MANY years to come) in order to put new attractions in the same space to ‘expand’…
Lois says
Why not retheme Mama Melroses to the Swedish Chef and make it MORE Muppets themed? Reopen the gift shop and give the whole Muppets courtyard a little love.
Ryan says
Someone said why have an Indiana Jones show here AND at AK, so get rid of the show here and put Monsters there. In the same case, if you put Monsters here then you will need to get rid of it at MK as well. I don’t really like Monsters and my kids love the Muppets and it’s been there for years.
Jaimie says
It would be so silly to replace the Muppets when there are so many other less popular attractions worth replacing.
