Okay, let’s talk about Disney concept art, particularly concept art for new lands and new rides.
So we recently attended D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, where Disney made a TON of announcements about new rides and lands coming to Disney Parks (so much that it almost broke our brains, y’all). That means that we also got TONS of new concept art for these new lands and rides, but once we started studying that concept art, we noticed something strange — and it has everything to do with birds.
So, let’s take a look at some of this concept art so you can see what we’re talking about. Let’s start with this art for the new Monsters, Inc.-themed land that’s coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios. If you look above the big Monster, Inc. building — do you see it?
It’s a flock of birds!
So that had us looking at other concept art and we started noticing a pattern. The concept art for the Encanto Casita attraction in Pueblo Esperanza (which will be taking over Dinoland, U.S.A.) also has a flock of birds flying around it.
As a matter of fact, the concept art for the new Indiana Jones ride, which will take place in a Mayan temple, ALSO the artwork has a flock of birds.
We’re guessing this is a murder of crows hanging about over the Villains Land concept art. Or maybe they’re ravens…
Will there be birds in the new Cars-themed land? Well, the concept art seems to suggest it.
Even the concept art for the new Avatar land coming to Disneyland has a flock of birds in it.
Are you sensing a pattern here? There are a LOT of birds in the concept art, but um…let’s take a look at some photos from Disney World, starting in Hollywood Studios. Do YOU see a flock of birds here?
Well, maybe Magic Kingdom has flocks of birds always flying over the castle…NOPE.
Okay, we lied because you will see ONE bird in Magic Kingdom…
Plus you can always watch the Feathered Friends in Flight at Animal Kingdom, so maybe that counts, too? Plus there are a lot of birds in the aviary on the Maharajah Jungle Trek. But still…
So what is up with this obsession with drawing birds in all the concept art for these places? Like is the concept artist just trying to will birds into being at the parks? Is this what happens to the kids who always make the “m” shaped birds in their pictures when they grow up to become professional artists? WHAT IS UP WITH ALL THE BIRDS?
For the record, the new Lion King land coming to Disneyland Paris’ Disney Adventure World ALSO has a flock of birds in it. OF COURSE, IT DOES.
We’ll probably never know, but this is the one thing we’ll now be looking for every time Disney releases new concept art.
Stay tuned to DFB for more.

Background birds in flight are commonly used in drawings to convey kineticism. On a static image, you need a way to portray energy and movement. Also, birds are symbolic representations of hope and new beginnings.

It’s in Daisy’s contract – no other birds allowed in the parks! 😉
