At D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, Disney announced that a Monsters, Inc. Land will be coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios!
Disney announced that the new land would include Disney’s first-ever suspended coaster that will have you zooming through the factory via a door. Other than that, Disney didn’t reveal too many other details about this new land, but we did notice something in the concept art that gives a HUGE hint about a restaurant coming to the land!
During the D23 expo, Disney released two pieces of concept art for the new Monsters Inc. Land in Disney’s Hollywood Studios. There was something VERY eye-catching that appeared in BOTH of the concept art drawings.
In the first concept art drawing, you will notice this eye-catching detail in the top right-hand corner…
In the second piece of concept art drawing, you will find it again in the bottom left-hand corner…
Did you spot it? Pretty eye-catching, right? In both concept art drawings you can see the iconic eyeball sculpture that is in front of Harryhausen’s in the Monsters, Inc. movie. This is the restaurant that Mike Wazowski takes Celia Mae out on a date for her birthday. It is also where Sulley barges in to tell Mike about Boo. While Sulley ends up crashing the celebration, it seemed like Mike and Celia were having a great time up until then.
Harryhausen’s is a Japanese restaurant that is notoriously hard to get a reservation to. In the movie, you can see monsters chowing down on eyeballs and sushi. The full menu includes appetizers such as Goo-Tofu, Vegetable Tempuki, Swill and Sour Soup, and Flab Cake. There is also a variety of sushi a la carte options like a Spider Roll, Carrion Katsu, Howling Hamachi, and more. For dinner dishes, you can choose from Assorted Yukitori and Kappa Mucki. The restaurant also offers some desserts and sake.
While Disney hasn’t officially confirmed that this restaurant will be coming to the new Monsters, Inc. Land, the fact that it is in both of the concept art drawings leads us to believe it is pretty likely we will see a Harryhausen’s in this new area. Could this mean we are getting a sushi restaurant in Disney’s Hollywood Studios? Only time will tell!

“Sushi! Sushi! You think this is about Sushi?!”
Probably my favourite line in the whole film! Celia is brilliant!

I love sushi, but I’m not sure that it’s what I’ll want during my theme park day (especially if temps are high), and not everyone I would be dining with likes sushi. It would be great to have someplace so iconic from the film, I just hope it has a diverse menu and doesn’t take up too much space. I mean, if the menu isn’t diverse, that would probably mean a place that’s meant to appeal to tween/teen+ demographics, and that would be nice, but… it’s probably just me, but hot and running around all day doesn’t say sushi to me.
I also wonder if the opening of Monsters land in HS will mean the Laugh Floor closes in MK, maybe even before Monsters land opens. I’d have mixed feelings about that, and my son would hate it. But my primary concern would be like the Stitch attraction, it would close and stay closed and unsused for years and years, far more than it would have taken to implement a plan to put something in the space. Disney has done this to many places, brining pointless disappointment and in Stitch’s case, eliminating what had to be a low-maintenance attraction that drew at least some visitors (it was always full when we visited, and we visit non-peak) to help thin crowds in the park.
