It is nearly Halloween, but Disney is already celebrating the spooky season! One of the coolest things about Disney Halloweens is the holiday overlay you can see at the Haunted Mansion in Disneyland.
Disney dresses up the ride with decorations and characters from the popular cult classic movie The Nightmare Before Christmas. While the movie came out in the 90s, it has found popularity much more recently. Throughout the Halloween and holiday seasons, you can see The Pumpkin King Jack Skellington, his dog Zero, and other popular characters within the ride. But there is one addition to the Haunted Mansion that everyone LOVES to see — the gingerbread house! And now Disney has shared an inside look at this marvelous structure.
When you ride the Haunted Mansion with The Nightmare Before Christmas overlay, you’ll see a giant gingerbread sculpture in the ballroom scene. You’ll likely smell gingerbread before you even see it, and this year’s creation is brand-new!
This year, Jack Skellington recruited Dr. Finkelstein, Halloween Town’s mad scientist, to create new ideas for the gingerbread house.
As he does, Dr. Finkelstein “incorporated some of his experiments into the gingerbread house.” He worked to create his new Gigantic Gingerbread Zombie, Lil’ Franky, and he has brought him to life (well, almost)! Unfortunately, the transformation isn’t quite complete and to finish the project his head must pop on and off (sounds terrible).
You may find more of Dr.Finkelstein’s creations as you continue through the Haunted Mansion. Disney also shared some awesome facts about the gingerbread house. It took over 150 hours to build and program the animation and lighting, not including the time to bake the gingerbread and put it all together! It is 5 feet tall and 6 feet wide and includes the following:
- 60 Pounds of Gingerbread
- 50 Pounds of Powdered Sugar
- 10 Pounds of Egg Whites
- 30 Pounds of Rolled Fondant
- 5 Pounds of Crystal Sugar
- 10 Pounds of Chocolate
- More than 240 Hours Spent Creating
- 2 Hidden Mickeys
That’s a lot of ingredients, time, and work to bring to life this wonderful creation! We just hope Lil’ Franky is doing alright.
If you want to see this creation and the rest of the Hallow-day overlay, you’ll have plenty of time as it will be around for the next few months! Drop by Disneyland Park and jump in a doom buggy this Halloween or holiday season.

Is this only in Disneyland? Not disney World?
DFB Gigi says
Hi Tami! Yes, the Nightmare Before Christmas overlay is only in Disneyland. The Haunted Mansion attraction in Walt Disney World does not get a layover.
