Is it just us or are more shows getting canceled on TV and streaming services now after just one season?
We recently saw Amazon cancel its My Lady Jane series after one season. Disney+ just canceled the Star Wars show The Acolyte after just one season. Disney+ also canceled Renegade Nell, again after just one season. Even The Muppets Mayhem didn’t survive the one-season cancelation curse on Disney+. Well, we’ve got some bad news about a new show on Netflix, too: Dead Boy Detectives has been canceled after one season.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dead Boy Detectives has been canceled by Netflix after just one season. The series followed a duo of ghosts and a medium who joined forces to become detectives for the supernatural. The characters originated in the Sandman comics and were created by Neil Gaiman, Matt Wagner, and Malcolm Jones III and went on to star in their own comic book series before being adapted to live-action for the Netflix show.
In the live-action adaptation, the characters were initially introduced in an episode of the Max series Doom Patrol. Interestingly enough, the Dead Boy Detectives series was originally slated for Max, but then moved over to Netflix for its first season. On Netflix, it spent three weeks on its top 10 for English-language series with about 9.6 million views at the time. It was also among Nielsen’s top 10 original streaming shows twice shortly after its premiere. So, needless to say, this cancelation is a big surprising.
Dead Boy Detectives was set in the same universe as another Netflix show (also based on a comic book series), Sandman. The Sandman series, however, is receiving a second season. It’s unclear why Netflix made its decision to cancel Dead Boy Detectives, given its popularity, but many of these cancelations often leave us scratching our heads, leaving viewers less likely to start other new shows if they haven’t yet been renewed for additional seasons.

Dead Boy Detectives was a pretty good show, IMO. I don’t remember even seeing any promos for Sandman. Maybe there were key actors who weren’t going to return for another season? Cancelation of a show even though it is popular is much more likely now with the streaming service environment, than used to happen with network/cable TV. I think that streaming services in particular are much more willing to and even try to build up an audience for a show without any ability or intention to try to continue it, even if it’s popular. For whatever reason, streaming services are less concerned about that impacting customer loyalty. I think that’s a mistake. We are way more willing to drop a service than we were in the past, rather than try to find something to watch on it. Especially the services that seem less and less focused on being what we joined them for, and more and more focused on what they think they can cut.

I’m very disappointed that this show has been cancelled! Every character was someone I grew to care about and the stories held your attention. I will miss it.

I liked this one.

This is why I don’t watch new shows anymore! If a show can manage to get a few seasons under its belt without getting the ax, then maybe I’ll watch it.
Right now I’m more into finding older shows that I never watched and binge the whole series. My heart can’t handle falling in love with show and then having it snatched away without properly wrapping it up lol!
