After Disney made some seriously MASSIVE announcements at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, rumors have been swirling about what exactly that means for Disney World.
A Monsters, Inc. coaster has been announced for Hollywood Studios and fans have been guessing just where it will go, with a few different possibilities swirling around out there. But, we definitely weren’t expecting an entirely NEW announcement about a permanent attraction closure at this park quite so soon — and certainly not for this reason!
Disney has announced that Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy will be permanently CLOSING.
The attraction is closing to make way for a BRAND-NEW Disney Villains show debuting at Sunset Showcase in the summer of 2025! Disney hasn’t shared too many details about this new show so far, but we do know the show will feature “dozens of the most infamous evildoers, with fiendish foes Cruella de Vil, Captain Hook and Maleficent each breaking through the glass to take the stage in live production numbers.”
But, it does mean we’ll have to say goodbye to Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy so Disney can make this transformation! Folks who want to experience this attraction one last time should do so before October 7th, 2024.
In the meantime, we’ll be on the hunt for even more details Disney reveals about this NEW villain show coming to Hollywood Studios. Don’t forget to stay tuned to Disney Food Blog for all the latest Disney news and more!

NO!!!! My two year old grandson LOVES Lightening McQueen. We are planning a trip in May of 2025 for him and were so excited for this show for him. I am sad and actually mad about this closing. Why all the villain stuff? Does the general Disney fan really want a villain show and a villain land. I know we don’t.

A celebration of villains? Really?

Not at all for any villain homage of any kind. What is Disney thinking? Really mad that we will be losing and missing Lightening McQueen for a villain show we will never attend!

I’m so excited for a villains-themed show, but I was hoping to see the Lightning McQueen attraction when we go in November since we’ve never seen it before. Oh well. 🙂

That was the ONLY character my son really wanted to see!! I’m so upset! Bring at least something with Cars, please!!

The show was cute, but it always did have a temporary feel to it. It’s too bad that the timing couldn’t align better for Cars fans (including us) with the opening of Cars land in MK. This Villains show will probably be temporary too, given their spot coming up in MK. I just hope that this isn’t a sign that Monsters land will be taking over Rock ‘N Roller Coaster, but I know its days are numbered. Aerosmith had to retire sometime, and I suppose if I had to choose between Muppets, which could survive indefinitely, and RNR, which definitely won’t… I just wish I had the guts to ride it one last time. It will probably be closed by our next visit if that’s where Monsters is going. We will go to the Villians show, it’s all in good Disney fun, and it’s a throwback to Club Villain that used to be in this space. But we will mourn RNR when it goes.
