What’s your rope drop strategy for Magic Kingdom?
With dozens of attractions, this park can often be the most challenging to tackle in the morning — how do you choose where to go first?! If you’re a Disney Resort guest, you can enjoy Early Theme Park Entry in Fantasyland and Tomorrowland, but the other lands of the park are free game for everyone when things officially open. And now, Disney has added a new factor into the mix.
As of September 9th, 2024, TRON Lightcycle / Run is no longer operating with a virtual queue in Magic Kingdom. Now, if you want to hop on the ride, you have to either purchase a Lightning Lane Single Pass or wait in the standby queue.
Because of this change, TRON has become a new hot commodity for rope drop in Magic Kingdom. The ride is not currently available during Early Theme Park Entry, so both Resort guests and off-site visitors are heading there first thing when the park officially opens.
Well, you may have guessed what the problem is then — the ride gets SUPER busy first thing in the morning! Rope drop wait times are often over an hour, but then we’ve seen the wait drop significantly later in the day. Sometimes it gets as low as 30 minutes midday!
So ultimately, if you’re hoping to ride TRON Lightcycle / Run in Magic Kingdom, we don’t recommend rope dropping it. Instead, we suggest you wait a few hours and THEN hop in line. If you’re an onsite guest, use that early morning time to knock out offerings like Space Mountain and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, and if you’re staying off-site, we suggest heading to Adventureland and Frontierland instead.
We’ll continue to keep an eye on TRON and see if these trends change in the future. At the time of publishing, two attractions in Disney World still operate with virtual queues — Tiana’s Bayou Adventure and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind. Disney has already expressed the desire to get rid of the Tiana’s Bayou Adventure virtual queue in the future, but we don’t know if Cosmic Rewind will ever go to a standby line or not. It’s pretty popular!

We’re in our 70’s, so Tron is not in our wheelhouse. When we “Rope Drop” MK, it’s Buzz followed by a leisurely ride (or 2) of the People Mover. We then mosey over to the Haunted Mansion and then down to Pirates and the Tiki Room
