Extra, extra, read all about it! Seriously, we’re sure Disney World hasn’t had a wink of sleep because it has dropped so many new updates this week. If you’ve missed out, this is your chance to catch up!
I’m back again with another round of WHAT’S NEW UPDATES AT DISNEY WORLD, a rundown on all the epic news and updates that happened at Disney World this past week. This week, we got the 4-1-1 on a new permit filed for BIG Test Track changes, a BIG ride change coming to EPCOT next week, and one of our favorite Halloween treats is back for a LIMITED time! Are y’all ready? Okay, let’s go!
NEWS: Disney Files Another New Permit for Big Test Track CHANGES at EPCOT
We’ve discussed the new Villains Land at Magic Kingdom, the Monsters, Inc. Land at Hollywood Studios, and the Tropical Americas at Animal Kingdom, but what about EPCOT? The park just wrapped up its massive transformation, but there are still some projects to be completed…including the major update for Test Track.
Test Track is currently closed for construction as the ride gets a “reimagining.” The overhaul will be inspired by Test Track’s predecessor, World of Motion, and will still be sponsored by Chevrolet. We’ve already seen some concept art for the new look.
We know that the ride will reopen in 2025, thanks to an announcement from D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event. Also, during that showcase, Disney confirmed the queue will feature six distinct exhibits, and within each room, celebrate the vehicles as well as the people behind the vehicles who usher in that next chapter in our collective journey.
But now, we’ve got another update! A permit was just filed with Orange County, FL for a Notice of Commencement on Test Track. This permit is specifically listed for Icarus Exhibits, Inc. to “install set elements” at the address belonging to the ride. Icarus Exhibits has previously worked with Disney World on a number of projects.
This is not the first of the permits that we’ve seen filed for this ride and show building, but it IS a pretty significant step in the process. Disney seems to be pushing through construction on this ride fairly quickly, considering it just closed for the refurbishment back in June.
We’ll continue to keep an eye on construction progress in the coming months and let you know if anything changes!

Disney Just Confirmed a BIG Ride Change Coming to EPCOT on September 21st
Picture this. You’re seated in a roller coaster ride vehicle. You’ve got a mission to save the galaxy. Your Starjumper vehicle is heading up the hill. You’re going through a jump point to space. No one’s gonna stop rock and roll from existing. Wait. I think we’re jumping back. Darkness.
Did you follow all that? We’re talking about the Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind ride in EPCOT. This ride is SO much fun, and Disney fans love that collective *hold your breath and wait for the launch* moment, complete with the big reveal when you blast off and find out what song will play as you zoom through space. Ugh. It’s fantastic.
If you’re unfamiliar, the Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind coaster features a randomized playlist of iconic songs, so you can listen for a different song each time you ride. There are six different songs you can hear:
- “I ran (so far away)” by a Flock of Seagulls
- “One Way or Another” by Blondie
- “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” by Tears for Fears
- “September” by Earth Wind and Fire
- “Disco Inferno” by the Trammps
- “Conga” by Gloria Estefan
This year, you can look out for another temporary music change! Disney is planning to play one song on repeat this September. Any guesses? Disney teased, “There’s only one Cosmic Rewind song that we’d put on repeat September 21. 🎶 Do you remember? 🎶” Watch the teaser below!
Oh, yes. On September 21st, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind will play ONE song for the entire day. Listen for “September” by Earth Wind and Fire if you visit the park! What better song to listen to on this special occasion? Make sure to grab a virtual queue reservation bright and early on September 21st if you’re interested in celebrating the day!
One of Our Favorite Halloween Treats Is BACK in Disney World for a Limited Time
The Maleficent Waffle Cone first debuted in Disney World at the 2018 Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party where it was made with a lime soft-service ice cream. It then made a comeback at Storybook Treats for the return of the Maleficent Dragon Float for the Festival of Fantasy Parade in 2019. Now, it has returned again for Halloween at another popular Disney World ice cream shop in Disney Springs, but this time it has a surprising twist!
This year, for Halloween, Swirls on the Water has brought back the Maleficent Cone! This revamped Maleficent Cone is made with pistachio and purple cheesecake soft-serve swirl in a black vanilla cone and topped with chocolate horns. It’s a fun new take on this popular ice cream cone for $6.49.
Of course, we had to give this new Maleficent Cone a try! It was a beautiful blend of the pistachio and cheesecake flavors. The chocolate horn pieces are hollow and cute, but they did have a hard staying on, so you might want to eat those first! The black vanilla cone is a nice touch aesthetically with the yellow sprinkles, but it’s not super important to the overall treat flavor.
The Maleficent Cone isn’t the only Halloween treat you can find at Swirls on the Water. They also have a Pumpkin S’mores Sundae for $6.49, or you can get a taste of the pistachio and purple cheesecake ice cream, the pumpkin and toasted marshmallow ice cream, and the DOLE Whip Pineapple and vanilla swirl ice cream in the sampler for $7.99.
Swirls on the Water is located along the water at the Marketplace in Disney Springs. They often offer limited-time seasonal items, so every time you stop by, you might find something new! If you like pistachio and cheesecake flavors, we recommend checking out the Maleficent Cone this year.
