This decades-old Disney ride is being replaced.
Change is a fact of life at Disney theme parks. Over the years — for better or worse — many rides, shows, attractions, and even whole lands have been shuttered after decades to be replaced by new and updated ones. Next month, one of the core attractions of Tokyo Disneyland’s Tomorrowland will fall victim to this progress.
On October 31st, the Tokyo Disneyland version of Buzz Lightyear’s Astro Blasters will close permanently. The attraction, which opened in 2004, is a variant of Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin attraction which opened at Walt Disney World in 1998.
The Star Command Space Ranger is being evicted to make room for a new attraction based on the 2012 animated film Wreck-It-Ralph.
According to Disney, the attraction — which is scheduled to open in 2026 — will “allow guests to “enter the candy-themed racing game Sugar Rush, which is being attacked by Sugar Bugs – glitches created by King Candy. Guests team up with the beloved film characters Ralph and Vanellope to transform the Sugar Bugs back to their original “kawaii” confectionery such as cookies and cakes.”
Judging by the attraction’s concept art, the Buzz Lightyear ride system will be directly reused, with guests using the former blasters to “transform the Sugar Bugs.”
Meanwhile, very similar variants of the Buzz Lightyear attraction still exist at Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disneyland Paris, and Shanghai Disneyland. A version had previously been in operation at Hong Kong Disneyland as well, however it was closed in 2017 and replaced by an Ant-Man and the Wasp attraction.
The Tokyo Disneyland version of Buzz Lightyear’s Astro Blasters will be closing at the end of October to make room for a new Wreck-It Ralph attraction. Stay tuned to DFB for further updates on Disney ride closures around the world.

I can’t imagine that change would go over very well here, but I have always wanted to be able to go into the land of Sugar Rush. I’m a huge Vannellope fan, and being able to get into my own Vannellope race car would be fire.

Agreed! I think a Sugar Rush-type ride (along the lines of Radiator Springs Racers) would be amazing! I’m kinda surprised they haven’t done it yet.

Considering that Anaheim has two newer and possibly better variations on this type of ride in DCA, including another Pixar one, I don’t think it would be the end of the world if they replaced Buzz with something else. This just sounds like the least expensive option
