If you are headed to the Caribbean soon, you will want to pay attention to travel advisories issued by the U.S. government.
New travel advisories were issued by the U.S. Department of State that include two Caribbean destinations.
A travel advisory has been reissued for Venezuela on September 24th, 2024. The U.S. Department of State reissued a travel advisory for Venezuela at Level 4, which means “Do not travel.” This travel advisory was reissued to “emphasize the danger to U.S. citizens living in or traveling to Venezuela.” The advisory states that there is a high risk of “wrongful detentions, terrorism, kidnapping, the arbitrary enforcement of local laws, crime, civil unrest, poor health infrastructure.”
Travel advisories range from a Level 1 which means “Exercise normal precautions” to a Level 4 travel advisory. A Level 2 means to “Exercise increased caution” while a Level 3 means “Reconsider travel.” Level 4 is the highest and indicates that travelers should not travel to that location.
While a Level 4 travel advisory for Venezuela is not new, the U.S. Department of State wants to continue to emphasize it is dangerous to travel to Venezuela. The government warns that the U.S. government cannot provide emergency services to U.S. citizens and cannot provide any consular assistance.
The U.S. Department of State also updated a travel advisory for Panama on September 23rd, 2024. The current travel advisory for Panama is a Level 2, which means to “Exercise increased caution.” The government recommends exercising caution due to crime and the potential for civil unrest.
While most of Panama is at a Level 2 travel advisory, certain parts of the country are at a Level 4, “Do not travel.” These parts of Panama include the Mosquito Gulf and Darién Region. The U.S. government warns of criminal activity and human trafficking networks in these areas, with limited police presence and emergency response.
If you are traveling, always to pay attention to travel advisories. These are issued directly by the U.S. government and aim to provide information on where it is safe to travel and where travel is discouraged.
