After announcing a long-promised crackdown on Disney+ password sharing, Disney is rolling out a program that will ideally turn password-sharers into customers who pay.
During the third quarter earnings call of Fiscal Year 2024, Disney shared that the password sharing suppression would be introduced sometime in September. And now, it looks like that time has come — here’s what we know.
Disney+ is introducing a “paid sharing program” that will give users the ability to pay for access to the streaming service on behalf of friends or family members outside their household — who may have been using the accounts already via password sharing.
Essentially, because your Disney+ subscription is meant to be used within your household, others outside of your household will need to sign up for this paid sharing service and pay for their own subscription as an Extra Member to your account — for an additional monthly fee.
Those in the United States looking to add someone outside of their household to their Disney+ subscription can do so for an additional $6.99/month for Disney+ Basic and $9.99/month for Disney+ Premium subscriptions. Note that only one extra Member slot is available per account, and the Extra Member option is not available to Disney Bundle subscribers or those billed through partner services.
If you don’t want to opt for the Extra Member add-on, those outside your household can sign up for their own subscription to Disney+. Account holders can transfer eligible profiles to a new subscription or Extra Member to not lose any settings.
And, if you typically use Disney+ on the go — you still can, as long as you’re a member of that household. If you see the message “This TV doesn’t seem to be part of the Household for this account”, you can mark yourself as I’M AWAY FROM HOME, or select UPDATE HOUSEHOLD if you’ve recently moved. Both of these selections will require a one-time passcode sent to the email address associated with the account.
The password crackdown and new paid sharing service come at the same time Disney has announced price increases for its family of streaming services. On October 17th, 2024, the ad-supported version of Disney+ will go up $2 to $9.99 monthly, the Premium version with no ads will also rise by $2 to $15.99 monthly, Hulu with ads will increase by $2 to $9.99 per month, and the ad-free Hulu plan will go up $1 to $18.99 per month. Disney’s triple-play bundles — featuring Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ — will also increase in price by $2. The Disney Bundle Trio Basic plan will go up to $16.99 per month, while the Disney Bundle Trio Premium plan will be $26.99 monthly.
