After a recent wave of layoffs of about 300 employees at the Walt Disney Company, Disney is looking to lay off even more employees.
The most recent round of layoffs within the company’s corporate operations included individuals in legal, HR, finance, and communications. At the time, no employees part of Parks, ESPN, or Disney Entertainment were laid off. However, approximately 75 individuals within a different department were just notified of a reduction of staff.
According to Variety, 75 individuals from Disney’s ABC News and local station operations will be laid off. This new set of layoffs is part of a series of moves throughout the media cooperation to cut costs and create a simpler operating environment.
Those affected were notified on Wednesday, October 2nd, of the coming layoffs. The 75 jobs being terminated are believed to be split evenly between the national news and local media business sectors.
Almin Karamehmedovic, president of ABC News, sent out a message to employees Wednesday, stating, “Across the various ranks of ABC News, a limited number of our colleagues are being impacted by staff reductions. As you know, this has been happening across the broader company and the industry at large in recent weeks and months. For us, it means shaping a team that embraces the new media landscape and evolves along with it, which we must do to continue serving our viewers.”
It is believed that none of the anchors assigned to ABC News’ popular programs, such as ‘Good Morning America,’ ‘World News Tonight,’ and others, will be affected by the layoffs. No national or local programming, specific employee teams, or groups are being terminated.
On Monday, September 30th, Disney combined some of its TV studios. Teams previously working on developing scripted comedy or drama at ABC or Hulu were merged.
President of ABC’s station group, Chad Matthews, sent a note on Wednesday saying, “It’s no secret that our industry is undergoing a transformation unlike any other, and we’re seeing headlines every day about streamlining across every major media company. While we’re not immune to the pressures facing this business today, we have been — and will continue to be — strategic with decisions about our organization’s future.”
Disney has been in the process of restructuring its media business as fewer media corporations are relying on linear TV. Disney has been focusing on streaming and has recently added Hulu to Disney+ along with new live channels to the app. The company is also working on a new ESPN service.
After these two recent waves of layoffs, we’ll be watching for any updates. Stay tuned to DFB for more Disney news.

ABC News is not really a news organization. Journalism is not on display and hardly practiced there. ABC News is a propaganda machine. ABC has completely ignored the sterling legacies of Frank Reynolds, David Brinkley and Peter Jennings with what they put on-air today. I feel sorry for the rank and file employees caught up in ABC’s biased News division and the consequences of their decision not to play things down the middle. CBS can’t be far behind.
