McDonald’s is finally bringing an in-demand item to the U.S.
McDonald’s changing out menu items is nothing new. The massive fast food chain is well known for swapping out items often and debuting new foods and drinks designed to go viral. Speaking of viral, the chain is reintroducing a viral international item to its American menu this month.
On October 3rd, McDonald’s announced that the Chicken Big Mac — which is exactly what it sounds like, a Big Mac with chicken instead of beef patties — is coming to U.S. locations for a limited time beginning on October 10th. The sandwich, which caused a viral sensation in the U.K. had only been previously been briefly available in the Miami market as a test several years ago.
Tariq Hassan, Chief Marketing and Customer Experience Officer at McDonald’s U.S.A. said in a press release, “With the introduction of the Chicken Big Mac, we’re excited to pay homage to one of our most iconic menu items, the Big Mac, and introduce it to a whole new generation of fans. By tapping into some of our fans’ biggest passions from dupe culture to live-streaming, we’re able to serve up more than just a sandwich. There truly is something for everyone to enjoy in this campaign and we’re bringing experiences that will surprise and delight them, all before the Chicken Big Mac hits restaurants.”
In addition to the announcement, McDonald’s confirmed that they had already staged a viral marketing stunt in conjunction with the sandwich’s launch. This past weekend, Chain launched a pop-up experience in Los Angeles named McDonnell’s that featured “a strangely familiar recipe of two chicken patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, and pickles on a sesame seed bun – plus Chain’s signature favorites like beef tallow fries, deep-fried apple pie and soft-serve.”
Many suspected that McDonald’s was behind the pop-up (since it seemed unlikely that it would legally be allowed if they weren’t) and the company confirmed it in their Chicken Big Mac press release.
McDonald’s highly anticipated Chicken Big Mac is scheduled to go on sale for a limited time in the U.S. on October 10th and will be available while supplies last. Stay tuned to DFB for further fast-food industry news.
