HUGE changes are coming to Disney World!
We are still not over all the exciting announcements that came from D23 this past August. Disney World is about to get so many new additions across all four parks. Hollywood Studios will be home to an all-new Monsters Inc.-inspired land. And while it was not announced at D23, Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy will close to make way for a new Disney Villains stage show. EPCOT will have an all-new Spaceship Earth-themed lounge as well as Test Track 3.0. Animal Kingdom is getting a massive overhaul as DinoLand U.S.A. will close to make way for a Tropical Americas-themed land named Pueblo Esperanza, which will include three new rides! Plus, the Tree of Life will get a brand new show called Zootopia: Better Zoogether! Magic Kingdom is also going to see quite a few changes, but could there be even more on the horizon?
It was highly anticipated that Magic Kingdom would be getting a significant expansion as the “Beyond Big Thunder Mountain” project had been teased for quite some time. At D23, we finally got confirmation of what is in store for the future of Magic Kingdom.
It was announced that Tom Sawyer Island, along with the Rivers of America, will close to make way for two new Cars-themed attractions.
Plus, we finally know what is about to be “Beyond Big Thunder Mountain” as the highly anticipated Disney Villains land was finally announced! While we do not have many details about this land, we do know that it is a pretty large expansion that will help distribute crowds in the park.
Do not get us wrong—we think these two projects for Magic Kingdom are great, but we believe there may be more in store.
Many fans were shocked that no announcements had been made about Tomorrowland in either Disney World or Disneyland. These lands are supposed to be futuristic, but unfortunately, the future is moving right on along, and Tomorrowland is staying in the past.
Closing an entire land is a risk as it means that there are fewer offerings available for visitors, and it can cause crowds to be unevenly distributed. No one likes to see construction walls on their vacation, and Disney World is about to be full of them, but we think we understand why Disney has not announced a Tomorrowland refurbishment yet.
The Villains land expansion will add significantly more room to the park, which means once the land opens, there will be more room for crowds to disperse. Once the Cars and Villains land projects are complete, there will be more offerings in Magic Kingdom to allow Tomorrowland to close and be re-imagined.
Now, this is not confirmed, and we are only speculating, but it would make sense for Disney to wait to close Tomorrowland once there are more offerings for visitors to enjoy. We are not alone in this thinking, as many of our readers have expressed similar thoughts.
We hope that this will be the case, as Tomorrowland is in desperate need of an update. We will continue to keep an eye out for any news pertaining to Tomorrowland’s future, but as for right now, it seems that we will have to wait for other projects to be completed first.
As always, keep following along with Disney Food Blog for more Disney news, updates, and tips!

Space Mountain is in DESPERATE need of some TLC, especially the track itself.

This is a good theory. I kept thinking they would close and update Space Mountain once TRON opened but since that hasn’t happened, I like your theory.
Lucretia Kleinman says
They close down all of Tomorrow Land ??
Lois Pierce says
Maybe once the new Space Mountain opens in Toyko Disneyland they’ll use some of the lessons they learn there to revamp or even rebuild our Space Mountain.
Peggy G. says
I agree that Space Mountain could use many improvements however, there is an entire empty building there they could use for a different ride. Stitch’s Great Escape of past could be transformed into something more like Guardians of of the Galaxy. That is certainly more futuristic than anything in Tomorrowland.

Please don’t change Carousel of Progress or Peoplemover! Anything else is fine:)

Space Mountain could do with a refurb, but it is way past time they put something in place of Tomorrowland Speedway. It’s antiquated and uses a huge amount of land they could do something so much better with.
Don says
Maybe they will build “Cars Land II-Wheels of the Future” and “Space Villains on Rockets” that way they could just rid of all that old stuff.
