Nostalgia is a powerful thing, and when it comes to movies, we love being able to return to those characters that we loved, especially in the late ’90s and early 2000s. Yep, bring on the Millennial nostalgia!!!
We still need to be pinched that we finally got a sequel to Hocus Pocus, and we’re even getting a sequel to Freaky Friday. Well, another fave Millennial Disney movie is getting a sequel. Yep, that’s right, The Princess Diaries 3 is FINALLY HAPPENING. No, we’re not just making it up. It’s been confirmed and everything!
Shut. Up. No, really. Anne Hathaway recently took to social media to confirm that The Princess Diaries 3 is happening with the caption, “Miracles happen. Back to Genovia with Disney Studios & Somewhere Pictures. The fairy tale continues.” YES!!!! Here’s the full announcement:
@annehathaway Miracles happen ✨👑 Back to Genovia with @Disney Studios & @Somewhere Pictures. The fairy tale continues ❤️🔥
Now, way back in 2022, we did have reports that a sequel was in the works with a script being written by Aadrita Mukerji (Quantum Leap). However, The Princess Diaries star Julie Andrews shot down those reports with the following statement:
“I think we know that it’s probably not going to be possible. It was talked about very shortly after two [The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement] came out, but it’s now how many years since then? And I am that much older and Annie the princess, or queen, is so much older. And I am not sure where it would float or run. In terms of us doing it, I doubt that now.”
The Hollywood Reporter just announced that The Princess Diaries 3 had hired Adele Lim (Crazy Rich Asians, Joy Ride) as the movie’s director. Shooting is expected to begin in 2025. Although it seems like Hathaway will be returning as Princess Mia, there has been no confirmation on whether Andrews will return to reprise her role as the Queen of Genovia.
We’ll be keeping an eye out for more news about the sequel, so stay tuned to DFB for more.

I love this news, and I know the beloved Julie Andrews does mostly voice work now, and apparently little of that. I would love it if it would work, but I have respect for stars who also simply say no if it is not for them. No one on the planet is getting younger.
