Oh, my word… have you HEARD about all of the HUGE CHANGES coming to the Disney World theme parks??
TWO new Cars-themed attractions are coming to Magic Kingdom’s Frontierland, and a new Villains Land will be going “Beyond Big Thunder Mountain.” Pueblo Esperanza will open in 2027 in Disney’s Animal Kingdom, replacing DinoLand. And Disney’s Hollywood Studios is also getting a brand new Monsters, Inc. Land! Now, if you’re wondering where that’s going, too, the answer is… it’s complicated.
EDITOR’S UPDATE 11/22/24: This post was published in October 2024. In November 2024, Disney announced that Muppets Courtyard will be closing in Hollywood Studios so work on the Monsters, Inc. land can begin in the area. Disney also revealed that as part of this new overhaul, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith will be rethemed to feature The Muppets.
Before we dive in, it’s important to note that when the upcoming Monsters, Inc. Land was announced in August 2024, a specific location in Hollywood Studios was not confirmed along with it or in the days following. (As a reference point, Disney announced where the two news Cars attractions are going to be added in Frontierland just a few days after the initial announcement, when it was revealed that they’ll be replacing what is currently Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America.)
But that doesn’t mean we are entirely without information here. You see, when Disney dropped a whole slew of announcements over the D23 2024: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, concept art was released for each project as well. Now, concept art is exactly that… a concept, a work in progress. But clearly there is some thought and intention behind it. And in looking at the pieces of concept art presented for Monsters, Inc. Land, it appears to present A Tale of Two Possibilities…
The story behind the upcoming land itself is that the monsters are inviting YOU to Monstropolis, where they need human laughter to power the city and keep it running!
The concept piece above presents a familiar looking land area and building structures. While things certainly looked reimagined, to be sure, the Monsters, Inc. building which is the focal point of the concept art resembles the building that currently houses the Star Wars Launch Bay, which is located in the area known as Animation Courtyard.
The Launch Bay presents photo opportunities and meet-and-greets with characters including Chewbacca, BB-8, and Darth Vader. (The attached Star Wars Launch Bay Theater has remained closed since the parks reopened following the temporary closure of the Resort in 2020.) You can also meet Disney Jr. pals in the area. (Say “hi!” to Vampirina, Fancy Nancy, and Doc McStuffins while you’re there!), and check out Disney Junior Play & Dance!
Animation Courtyard is also home to the building of an upcoming new show, The Little Mermaid — A Musical Adventure and Walt Disney Presents; however, those attractions are just outside of the area that the concept art displays.
But that’s not where the story ends… THIS is an additional piece of concept art that Disney has shared:
Now, the layout here is entirely different from that in the first piece of concept art. It much more closely resembles the area currently known as Grand Avenue.
Grand Avenue is an area inspired by California that leads the way into Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. The primary highlight along the avenue is the popular BaseLine Tap House. But the larger area is also home to Muppets Courtyard, which features the beloved Muppet*Vision 3D attraction along with restaurants including PizzeRizzo and Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano.
But this piece of concept art isn’t the only possible hint we’ve received that things might be changing in this particular area, and there is concern among fans that the future of Muppet*Vision 3D may be in peril.
All that said, until Disney officially confirms the location for Monstropolis, those are the two major speculations based on the information we’ve received so far. No matter where it’s located within the park, however, we do know that Monsters, Inc. Land will house Disney’s very first suspended coaster!
And we believe we’ve identified some other possible additions to the area when zooming in on concept art.
For instance, when zooming on one piece you can see the iconic eyeball sculpture that is in front of Harryhausen’s in the Monsters, Inc. movie. And we’ve also spotted a new possible treat that we are very hopeful for: Monsters, Inc. ice cream!!
We can’t wait to keep you posted on everything coming to Monsters, Inc. Land as it is revealed! Of course, as we mentioned earlier, this new addition is only one of MANY on their way to the Disney theme parks, and if you’d like to hear about everything (and I do mean EVERYTHING), you can check out our DFB YouTube video right here!
