Let’s be honest. We all have that one guilty pleasure, right?
What’s mine? McDonald’s Chicken McNuggets. You heard me. Whether it’s 10AM, after a long night out, or just a quick stop between errands, there’s just something about those crispy golden nuggets that always hits the spot. But the other day, I stumbled across some information that honestly, I wish I hadn’t, and now I can’t look at my beloved nuggets the same way again.
As I was saying, it all started when I was mindlessly scrolling through the internet and ended up on McDonald’s corporate website. Don’t ask me why (I was probably hungry). While I was there I found out something about Chicken McNuggets that I did not need to know.
You see, I always thought there was a little magic behind each nugget. Maybe I’m just naive, but I kind of assumed they were cut from some real chicken shape, you know? Well, I was sorely mistaken.
Now, brace yourselves, because this is the part where my whole nugget-loving world was shattered. Apparently, McNuggets only come in four specific shapes. Yup, you heard that right. Just four shapes. I know. I know. You’re probably thinking, “Wait, what?” Trust me, I had the same reaction.
Chicken McNuggetsHere’s the actual quote that set me down this dark path of nugget knowledge: “Yes, they really do come in four distinct shapes. There’s the Bone or the Bow Tie, the Ball, the Bell, and – our personal favorite – the Boot. Which one are you reaching for first?”
First of all, they named the shapes?? And second of all, how come no one has ever mentioned this before? Maybe I’m just late to the party, but I honestly thought each nugget was a unique little creation, not a carbon copy from a mold. I don’t know why I feel so betrayed, but I do.
I get it. McDonald’s is a fast food giant and uniformity is key for efficiency, but did they really have to go and tell us this? I was perfectly content in my nugget ignorance, happily munching away without a care in the world. But now, with every bite I’m trying to figure out if I’m about to eat a Bone or a Bow Tie, and honestly, that just takes away the fun.
So, here’s my advice: If you love McNuggets, maybe don’t dig too deep into how they’re made. Some things are better left a mystery. Will I still eat them? Yeah, probably, but from now on, I’ll definitely be eyeing that Boot a little differently.

Are you REALLY ready to get your mind blown? I have a co-worker who was in a focus group of kids in the early 90s (I think — or maybe late 80s) which led to McD choosing the shapes that were most appealing to kids!
