Okay, it is an AMAZING time to be a Star Wars fan because Star Wars is literally everywhere.
We’ve got Star Wars books, comics, TV shows (and I am SO STOKED about the upcoming Skeleton Crew series on Disney+), movies, even more movies, merchandise, and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in TWO Disney Parks. So why do I feel so weird about a new report that Disney is working on MORE Star Wars movies? Well, it’s complicated (and let’s face it, Star Wars fans also tend to be pretty complicated).
Deadline recently reported that Disney is planning a NEW Star Wars trilogy with Simon Kinberg (X-Men) set to direct. And yes, as soon as I heard the word “trilogy,” I inwardly cringed. Okay, so, yes the original Star Wars movies were a trilogy, and then there was the prequel trilogy, followed by the sequel trilogy (and those two weren’t widely beloved by fans). Now, don’t get me wrong, I loved both the prequels and sequels (although I would argue the best of the sequel movies is The Last Jedi because it was the only film in that trilogy that DIDN’T try to copy previous movies).
Anyway, Kinberg will write the trio and produce them with Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy. Kinberg is certainly a good choice for a new Star Wars project: he worked with Dave Filoni and Carrie Beck on the excellent Star Wars Rebels animated series and acted as a consultant on Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. So he knows his stuff.
So here’s the thing. There are already MANY Star Wars projects in the works, including previously reported projects with James Mangold, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, and Taika Waititi. There’s also the Mandalorian and Grogu and another untitled Star Wars movie to be led by Dave Filoni. Do we really need three MORE movies? Especially when we also have three TV shows coming soon, including Skeleton Crew, season 2 of Andor, and season 3 of Ahsoka?
There’s also the issue of WHEN does this new trilogy take place? Deadline originally suggested that the new trilogy would pick up after the events of Episodes 10-12, which supposedly ended The Skywalker Saga. Like many fans, I’m kind of Skywalker-ed out and I don’t have a lot of interest in continuing those storylines. However, others in the industry suggest this is a new trilogy that will align with the other movies that are already in the works, but then again, does it have to be a TRILOGY? Is that what fans want at this point?
My fear is that Disney is going to do to Star Wars what it did with Marvel: oversaturate us to to the point where we have Star Wars fatigue. Don’t get me wrong: I’m all for new Star Wars, but I don’t think we need three more movies added to the production schedule — let’s just focus on those films that have already been announced, shall we?
So, yes, this news has me feeling a ton of emotions right now, but I guess, we need to see where Disney plans to go with this new trilogy.
