In case you haven’t heard (though, at this point, it seems like EVERYONE is talking about the news), Disney confirmed that the Muppet Courtyard in Disney’s Hollywood Studios is closing to make way for Monsters, Inc. Land.
Muppet*Vision 3D will permanently close when this part of the park closes. Or…will it? Well, thanks to some mysterious clues from both Disney AND The Jim Henson Company, we have a lot of new questions about the fate of this iconic show.
When Disney announced its new plans for the Grand Avenue section of Hollywood Studios, it confirmed a few important things:
- The Muppets will be taking over Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster “teaming up with some of music’s biggest stars for a rockin’ music festival”
- The world of Monsters, Inc. will be built on the south side of Disney’s Hollywood Studios (in place of the Muppets Courtyard)
- A whole new theater show is coming to the new Monsters, Inc. Land
Disney also tucked a potential clue about Muppet*Vision 3D in its recent announcement, and it has a lot of fans theorizing about what it could mean. The statement reads, “As we move forward with these changes, we are having creative conversations and exploring ways to preserve the film and other parts of the experience for fans to enjoy in the future.” Does this mean the show will take on a new 2D format on Disney+? Who knows! Actually, we know who knows.
On November 23rd, The Jim Henson Company took to social media to share a statement about the recent news. The statement reads:
Jim Henson’s final project was Muppet*Vision 3D, now regarded as a true theme park classic. Innovation was always Jim Henson’s north star, and his trailblazing career led him to a unique challenge: a truly immersive Muppet experience where audiences are part of the happy chaos of the iconic Muppet Show. Originally debuting in 1991, Muppet*Vision 3D combined 3D technology with real-world practical effects, alongside animatronic and live Muppet characters. The result was a one-of-a-kind Jim Henson experience, and an unforgettable capstone to Jim’s magnificent career. As we learn of the show’s upcoming closure in its current form at Disney’s Hollywood Studios , we look forward to Muppet*Vision 3D’s next act.”
One part of this statement caught our eye. Did anyone notice it? The Company said, “We look forward to Muppet*Vision 3D’s next act.” What could THAT mean?!
For now, we have a lot of questions but not much in the way of answers. In the meantime, we’re always on the lookout for the latest Disney news, so stay tuned for more.

Any chance it could be moved to the now unused Lightning McQueen theater next to Rock n’ Roller coaster?
Tom Welsh says
Muppet-3D (actually 4D, if you include bubbles and water spray) has always been one of our favorite attractions, every single visit. We will be very disappointed if it goes the way of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, Horizons, Ellen and other classics.
For us, that’s the REAL Disney, not roller coasters.
Marilyn says
Totally agree with Tom Welsh. Disney is not what it used to be. It is no longer Disney but just another theme park made up of roller coasters and things that make in just another theme park and not something different nor what it was supp supposed to be.
CeCe says
Didn’t they announce they are closing the Cars show that is behind Rock n Rollercoaster? Maybe with the RNR retheme the area where the Cars show is might become something Muppet related? Or maybe they will move Muppetvision 3D there?
Kristin says
Just in case Disney reads comments, I am a diehard Muppets fan and I wear my celebration Muppet button every time I go to Disney. It’s a special button that was given to me by cast members of Muppet vision 3-D! I truly hope Disney is thinking of ways to put more Muppets into the parks. That whole area by rockin roller coaster could be a Muppets themed place and I would spend my whole day there. Get rid of Lightning McQueen’s racing academy and put the Muppet show there!
Also, if Disney removes monsters laugh factory from tomorrowland, I need them to replace it with Muppets in space!
Ron Oakes says
Given the historical nature of Muppet Vision 3D and its relationship with Jim Henson, I believe it should have been given some sort of Landmark status. I recall the version at California Adventure is still in place, so at least we have it on the West Coast.
I hope that Disney is looking at putting it back somewhere. It is Jim Henson’s final legacy.

I agree with Tom. Too many classics are being pushed out for, often times, mediocre replacements.

You know…I get innovation..new things, always moving forward- I get it. But some things are better left alone. First Splash Mountain, then Tom Sawyer’s Island, now the Muppets?? Sorry Disney. You’ve lost your damn minds.
Robert Allen says
Muppets in Rocking Roller Coaster, why? It not a ride for young children.

I grew up with The Muppets and loved them, but let’s take a step back folks and realize that they don’t sell anymore. The several recent failed television attempts confirms that. Don’t blame Disney, but rather blame the public. Those talking about how it’s a favorite and they never miss it are a small percentage. If you owned a company, would you use existing resources (in this instance ground and buildings) to construct something that would drive a lot of new interest and visitation or would you leave something in place and accept current business levels? While many will say the later in this case, they are fooling themselves that they wouldn’t do the same thing.
The questions never end as to how Disney will respond to Epic Universe, but with every announcement people complain. You can’t bring in new without replacing some old. Disney isn’t going to add a fifth gate because they don’t need to and the ability to expand parks isn’t as easy as everyone wants to make it sound. Take an aerial look at Hollywood Studios and it’s land-locked on two sides by roads and a third side with the entrance and parking.
While most were hoping this would replace the aging and uninspired Animation Courtyard, I suspect that the new coaster building size was problematic for that space. Things will get replaced because the public’s appetite changes and companies can’t ignore that unless they want to fail. It’s definitely a win to replace Aerosmith with the Muppets. Hopefully the show will find a new location.

Muppet*Vision 3D is my absolute favorite Studio attraction. DON’T MESS WITH IT ! No Muppet Vision, no John (and family) !
