There are plenty of changes going on at Disney World right now — and we’re pretty darn excited about them!
Over at Animal Kingdom, the new Tropical Americas Land is already underway, and Villains Land and Cars attractions in Magic Kingdom are coming in the future, too. Now that we officially know where the new Monsters, Inc. Land coming to Hollywood Studios will be located, we’re diving into the concept art to see what we can decode.
Disney has officially announced that Monsters, Inc.Land will be located on the south side of Grand Avenue at Disney’s Hollywood Studios — also known as Muppets Courtyard. As you might have guessed, with this change, we’ll have to say goodbye to Muppet*Vision 3D, PizzeRizzo, Mama Melrose, and the bathrooms in this area.
The story of the land will pick up after the events of the popular Pixar film, and humans have now been invited to visit the world of Monsters, Inc. Disney shares that here, “you’ll be able to stroll the streets alongside some of your favorite monsters” and even visit the Laugh Factory!
Not only that, but the new Monsters, Inc. land will feature Disney’s VERY FIRST suspended coaster, which “will put you right in the middle of the monster action. Just be sure to fill out your paperwork! Roz is always watching…”
In addition to this brand-new coaster, Disney recently announced that Monsters, Inc. land will also have a new theater show (but just what they mean by “new” remains a mystery — more on that later!)
Disney recently revealed new concept art for the retheme and we think we’ve got a pretty good idea of what might be in store after ferociously zooming in all over the place. Since we know Monsters, Inc. land will be taking over what is currently the Muppets Courtyard area on the south side of Disney’s Hollywood Studios, we can use that current land as a guide.
In the back, where Mama Melrose’s currently sits, appears to be Harryhausen’s — the restaurant Mike Wazowski takes Celia Mae out on a date for her birthday. It is a Japanese restaurant that is notoriously hard to get a reservation to (but we’re hoping that isn’t the case for the real thing!)
While Disney hasn’t officially confirmed that this restaurant will be coming to the new Monsters, Inc. Land, the fact that it is in multiple concept art drawings leads us to believe it is pretty likely we will see a Harryhausen’s Restaurant in this new area. A sushi restaurant would make a great addition to Hollywood Studios!
Disney also recently revealed that Monsters, Inc. land will be home to a “whole new theater show,” which was previously unknown to the public. From what it looks like, this show will likely take over the theater where Muppet*Vision 3D is currently located. This would make sense, as Disney would just have to change over the theming and not build an entirely new theater.
Unfortunately, that’s pretty much all we know about this show for now. But, we did notice something interesting in the latest concept art…
…that appears to be a billboard advertising Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor at Magic Kingdom. Now, it’s entirely possible that this is just an in-universe joke — especially since Disney specified this would be a “new” show, but wouldn’t it make sense for Laugh Floor to move from Magic Kingdom to Hollywood Studios for this new land?
Don’t worry, though, this isn’t the end of The Muppets in Hollywood Studios. In fact, The Muppets will be moving to Sunset Boulevard and taking over Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster! The Muppets will be the star of the show on Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster and will be teaming up with some of “music’s biggest stars for a rockin’ music festival.”
When it comes to Muppet*Vision 3D’s impending closure, Disney said, “As we move forward with these changes, we are having creative conversations and exploring ways to preserve the film and other parts of the experience for fans to enjoy in the future.” Could this mean the show will wind up on Disney+? Or, perhaps Disney will use parts of Muppet*Vision 3D in the new Monsters, Inc. show.
We’re excited to see how Disney will team up with “some of music’s biggest stars for a rockin’ music festival.” The current Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster stars rock legends Aerosmith, but it will be interesting to find out who Disney gets to collaborate with on this ride.
In the meantime, we’ll be sure to keep an eye out for the latest news about Monsters, Inc. land, the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster retheme, and more. Don’t forget to stay tuned to the Disney Food Blog so you don’t miss any updates!

leave the muppets where they are…dont bury them on the Rockin Roller Coaster with half the audience appeal and no family appeal under 10. Put Monsters Inc., Monstropolis, and Monsters U over in a reimagined Star Wars Hotel with plenty of room to build the new “Door” ride attraction and more.

all of these wonderful things Monsters Inc, can bring to the massed would work even better if it were located in a newly reimagined vacant Star Wars Hotel site.
