It’s been a big week for Muppet news.
We know it feels like a lot to take in. This past week, Disney announced that Muppets Courtyard would be closing to make room for the new Monsters, Inc. Land coming to Hollywood Studios, but that wasn’t all. Disney announced that to make way for the new addition, the Muppets would be MOVING and taking over Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster! Exciting, right? Absolutely, but what does that actually mean? Shocking? Sure! So, let’s break it down!
Let’s start at the beginning — at the same time Disney announced the Muppets Courtyard closure, which will include Muppet*Vision 3D, PizzeRizzo, Mama Melrose’s, and everything else in that area. New concept art of the new Monsters, Inc. Land clearly shows the area fitting into the entirety of Muppets Courtyard, plus an expansion towards the back, whereas the previous concept art kept things more vague.
Disney then, as we said, announced that the Muppets would be taking over Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster where they’ll team up with some of “music’s biggest stars for a rockin’ music festival.” That’s fantastic and all, and from the concept art, it looks like the attraction will certainly star Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, as well as Kermit and Miss Piggy, and that the ride vehicles themselves will be getting quite the retheme.
Fans of the Muppets though have been very upset that, for people who can’t enjoy roller coasters, they won’t be able to experience this theming, which was a big reason they were upset to lose Muppet*Vision 3D, which everyone can enjoy. However, hope was brought back when the Jim Henson Company shared a statement about the closure, closing it out with, “As we learn of the show’s upcoming closure in its current form at Disney’s Hollywood Studios , we look forward to Muppet*Vision 3D’s next act.”
So there IS a chance Muppet*Vision 3D could be preserved somewhere in the parks, and our hope of that continued to grow when we saw Disney’s official announcement released on November 22nd, in which part of it reads, “To make way for the monsters, Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and more of their friends will be moving right along to Sunset Boulevard! But there’s more to the story: The Muppets will be taking over Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, teaming up with some of music’s biggest stars for a rockin’ music festival!”
Wait a minute, it says they’re moving along to Sunset Boulevard and THEN mentioned the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster retheme as an addition to that. So is this insinuating we’ll see MORE Muppets representation on Sunset Boulevard instead of just having the rethemed coaster? There are so many questions, and we won’t have the full answers to them for quite some time, but you can bet we’ll keep you updated on everything as we hear about it, so stay tuned to DFB!
