Sure, people like to make jokes about the classic “it’s a small world” song, but you cannot deny that the charming little tune has endured for decades. This simple, slow-moving Disney attraction is endearing, colorful, and universally loved. It’s just a classic!
From Disneyland Park in Anaheim to Magic Kingdom to Tokyo Disneyland, this attraction reaches people from all over the world — even Disneyland Paris and Hong Kong Disneyland have a version of this ride. So, who’s behind the beloved song that accompanies the ride? Two incredibly talented songwriters Disney fans might recognize — Richard and Robert Sherman.
Just in time for Thanksgiving, Disney presented a gift to the world courtesy of award-winning songwriting duo Robert and Richard Sherman. These brothers were the creative minds behind some of Disney’s most classic songs, including Walt Disney’s favorite song, “Feed the Birds,” from Mary Poppins. They also composed the score for The Jungle Book and many other films.
Robert Sherman passed away at 86 on March 5th, 2012. Twelve years later, Richard Sherman passed away on Saturday, May 25th at the age of 95. In Disney’s new short film titled The Last Verse, available on YouTube and Disney+, Disney shares Richard Sherman’s “last contribution to Disney.” All we can say is this: keep tissues nearby. This will make you CRY.
Disney explained that Richard Sherman further influenced the message of “it’s a small world” with his third, final verse. We won’t spoil the film for you (seriously — go watch it), but the last verse is a beautiful addition.
The timing is perfect — we’ve reached the 60th anniversary of the song! What better way to honor its legacy than with a musical tribute courtesy of the original songwriter? Now THAT is poetic.
If you need to reach us, we’ll be busy bawling our eyes out…because how can you not after that last verse? Bravo, Disney, and thank you, Richard and Robert Sherman, for making the world a better place through your music.
In the meantime, we’re always on the lookout for the latest Disney news, so stay tuned for more.
