Disney has been working hard to expand ESPN and to seamlessly provide consumers with sports content.
A direct-to-consumer sports streaming platform has been discussed at length, and CEO Bob Iger continues to look for ways to bring us better sports entertainment. One of the most talked about ways of doing that has been the addition of the ESPN tile to Disney+. This tile would act similarly to the Hulu tile, which was recently added. This makes it easy for subscribers to access all their content in one location. Well, after talking about this coming service for a while now, it has officially launched!
As of December 4th, Disney+ subscribers will see the ESPN tile right on the homepage of their Disney+ app. This will provide a new hub with select sports content, all within a single app. The new service will provide live coverage of sports games, giving more people the ability to enjoy the content.
According to Disney, it will be a “seamlessly integrated viewing experience.” Options are available right away, with lots to come! John Lasker, Senior Vice President of EPSN+, shared, “In the first 90 days, bundle subscribers should expect 5,000 live events, including NFL, NBA, NHL, College Basketball, and Australian Open. Also, new originals from 30 for 30 and ESPN Original Series.”
Standalone Disney+ subscribers are now able to access a selection of live sports, studio shows, and ESPN Films from ESPN+. This will include The Simpson Funday Football animated Monday Night Football game, a lineup of five NBA games on Christmas Day, a Dunk the Halls animated NBA presentation, and the first day of coverage of the Australian Open. Of course, you can also enjoy a select collection of TV shows and movies from Hulu.
Alisa Bowen, President of Disney+, stated, “One of the things I’m most excited about with this launch is that we’re also making the ESPN and Hulu tiles visible to all subscribers. That means for our Disney+ standalone subscribers, they’ll have a really easy way to discover everything we offer from these two incredible brands and have the ability to upgrade their subscription for the full bundle experience.”
Disney is excited about this new addition to Disney+ and the groundwork it lays for the upcoming launch of ESPN’s flagship direct-to-consumer product, which is expected to be available in the Fall of 2025. If you’re looking for sports content to enjoy over the holidays, head to your Disney+ app to enjoy all the great content in one place! You can enjoy those holiday movies and live sports right from the Disney+ app.
