How far will you go to hear a “secret” Moana song?
Often, Disney’s animated musical films have songs that end up on the cutting room floor for one reason or another. Some of these songs aren’t seen as “up to snuff” compared to the others written for the film, while others are just as good as the songs that become classics but are cut for time or plot reasons, only to be resurrected in later versions. For example, “Proud of Your Boy” and “Human Again” were cut from Aladdin and Beauty & The Beast respectively, but both songs were restored for their respective Broadway interpretations and various special soundtrack and home media releases. Now, a mostly unheard Moana song has found a second life in an unexpected place.
When the Moana soundtrack was first released back in 2016, the deluxe edition featured several outtakes from the film’s songwriter Lin Manuel Miranda. One of these tracks, “Warrior Face” gained a bit of renown online as the demo recording featured performances from Christopher Jackson and Phillipa Soo, who respectively portrayed George Washington and Eliza Schuyler in Miranda’s Hamilton.
Fast forward to 2024, and “Warrior Face” has been restored to the version of Moana performed on the Disney Cruise Line’s latest ship, the Disney Treasure. The song is performed by Maui and Moana herself in the show.
Disney The Tale of Moana, performed in the ship’s Walt Disney Theatre takes audience members on a “deep dive” into the story of Moana, and features “vibrant dance and songs in a mix of languages, including Tuvaluan, Tokelauan and Samoan.”
A “lost” song has been restored to Moana for the live adaptation of the film that’s staged on the Disney Treasure, beginning with the ship’s December 21st maiden voyage. Stay tuned to DFB for more on the Disney Cruise line’s entertainment offerings.
