A Holes series has just been ordered to pilot for Disney+ and we can hardly contain our excitement about it.
Disney+ has recently become a gold mine of series created exclusively for the streaming platform especially when their streaming library expanded with the merger of other companies like Hulu and ESPN+. Variety has announced that the potential show’s pilot has been ordered to test on Disney+ which will bring a new story based on the late 90’s hit children’s book by Louis Sachar.
While we’re already huge fans of the 2003 feature film by the same title (also a Walt Disney Pictures release), it will be interesting to see how this new adaptation breathes new life into the storyline. It will certainly be intriguing to see a new spin on a popular children’s book title and introduce younger children to the series and, by extension, the book as well.
Walden Media is reportedly producing the pilot which has been something they’ve been trying to get off the ground for awhile. Interestingly, they also produced the film that proved to be a hit with families and fans of the book. To bring this adaptation to life, Alina Mankin (known for her work on Anne With An E & The Mindy Project) has been called to adapt the potential show as a writer and executive producer. Additionally, Liz Phang (who you might know from titles like Yellowjackets and Locke & Key) has been brought in as the showrunner and executive producer. If that wasn’t enough of a star-studded crew, Drew Goddard will executive produce as Goddard Textiles along with Sarah Esberg.
If you’re wondering just how this new series may differ from the full-length film based on the book, here’s what we know so far. According to the official logline for the project, “In this reimagining of the beloved 1998 book from Louis Sachar, a teenage girl is sent to a detention camp where the ruthless Warden forces the campers to dig holes for a mysterious purpose.”
It will be interesting to see what Walden Media, 20th Century, and the incredible crew already announced to be working on the project come up with to weave a different perspective of the story within the Holes book which featured Stanley Yelnats, a kid with the worst of luck who is sent to a juvenile detention camp for a crime he did not commit. While the main character seems to be changing from the original storyline in the book, it seems the circumstances the character will face may be very similar.
According to Goddard, “They’ve done a wonderful job capturing Louis Sachar’s unique spirit,” and he also offered further, “To say much more about what they have in store would spoil all the fun.” So it seems we’re a bit in the dark on the pilot’s casting for now and further details we’ll find in the story. But we have to admit our interests are already piqued and we will be keeping a close watch over this project as more details are revealed.
