The Skyway was a Disneyland staple from 1956 through 1994. The arial tramway — the first Von Roll Type 101 aerial ropeway from Swiss company Von Roll, Ltd. in the United States — traveled between Tomorrowland and Fantasyland. From 1959 onward, the Skyway literally passed THROUGH the Matterhorn.
The ride closed due to metal fatigue issues on November 9, 1994. Stress cracks had developed inside the Matterhorn tower battery supports, and fixing them would have required a long and costly refurbishment that would have closed the Matterhorn attraction, which Disney deemed to be operational and financially untenable.
While the Skyway has been closed for over 30 years, fans can celebrate the iconic attraction with a NEW straw clip at Disneyland RIGHT NOW! Stay tuned to DFB for more on Disney’s latest souvenir offerings.
