We’re headed to Hawaii with a review of goodies from Mama’s Snack Stop at Disney’s Aulani Resort.
Atmosphere
Mama’s Snack Stop is just that — a little snack shack in Waikolohe Valley out by the pools at Aulani and right next door to Pāpālua Shave Ice. This stand is convenient for a quick bite while at the pools, beach, or any other activity you are doing at the hotel.
Eats
On this trip we started out with the Local Red Frank on a Soft Roll. Here, the roll is hollowed out from the end and the Frank is inserted (a la Puka Dog if you’ve ever had one). It had a very subtle hickory flavoring. The meat itself had a smooth texture, and the skin had no snap to it, unfortunately.
The Portuguese Sausage on the other hand had a very nice snap on the skin, and it had the expected mild spiciness with a strong garlic flavor. It was a hearty dog that paired very well with the garlic aioli that came on the side. We ordered it on the soft roll, but it would have probably been even better on the crusty roll.
Next, we tried the Buffalo-Ranch Fried Chicken “Tender Dog.” If you like spicy, this is for you. It was drenched in a spicy Buffalo sauce and ranch. The ranch was a little minimal, so I would recommend asking for extra ranch dressing on the side if you’re a ranch fan.
Also, the soft roll became soggy very quickly. It would have been better suited for a crusty roll like the Portuguese Sausage.
On a different visit, we also got the Coconut-breaded Shrimp and Fries. These were large meaty shrimp covered in a crunchy coconut breading, but the coating did not overpower the shrimp. The fries that came with it were light, fluffy, and crispy and paired well with the shrimp.
With my meal I got a bag of Maui Style Maui Onion Chips. These were great! They were thick cut, kettle style chips, but were not oily like some kettle chip varieties out there. They had a very sweet onion flavor that was very mellow.
The Pièce de résistance was the Macadamia Nut-Pineapple Cupcake. This was a moist vanilla cupcake with pieces of macadamia nuts and sweet pineapple chunks mixed throughout.
The pineapple you find in Hawaii is nothing like what you find in the grocery store back in the mainland. In Hawaii, it is much sweeter and fresh tasting. This was no exception; the pineapple lent a very sweet flavor to the cake. The whole thing was topped with icing that was like a light meringue with a light and airy texture.
Mickey Mouse sprinkles and Macadamia nuts topped the icing. Garnished on top was a piece of white chocolate shard and a piece of dehydrated pineapple coated with more white chocolate.
Overall
Mama’s Snack Stop offers some unique tastes in close proximity to the outdoor recreation areas at Aulani. Whether you’re looking for a meal or a light snack, the menu will curb your hunger.
