Being that it’s July – the month we celebrate America’s independence – it’s not surprising to find a little extra red, white, and blue around Disney World these days.
Of course, Americans aren’t the only ones who claim these colors in their flag. Among others, our friends in France do, too!
Still, you don’t really expect to see these colors incorporated together in your food, which is why I was so surprised to spot the new Vanilla Macaron Ice Cream Sandwich at L’Artisan des Glaces in Epcot’s France Pavilion, sporting the colors of the French flag!
I have to applaud the creativity of the chefs who came up with this treat. Check out the incredibly vivid red and blue making up each side of the macaron!
Of course, those colors may make you question the flavor of the macaron surrounding the ice cream – it’s vanilla. Essentially, this is the vanilla version of this treat’s counterpart, the Chocolate Macaron Ice Cream Sandwich. In fact, the vanilla version comes to you in that same French “newspaper” wrapping.
If you’ve enjoyed the housemade ice cream at L’Artisan des Glaces, then you know how very creamy, dense, and decadent it is, and this is certainly true of the rich vanilla ice cream in the center of this sandwich.
The vanilla macaron surrounding the ice cream differs from the one surrounding the chocolate version in that it is a fair bit crunchier than the soft, melt-in-your-mouth texture that I associate with a macaron.
While I prefer more traditional texture of the chocolate, the bonus of the difference is that the vanilla sandwich stays together pretty well throughout eating.
All in all, it’s another fun and tasty treat from L’Artisans des Glaces! I wonder if this one had some additional takers as guests at Epcot awaited the special Fourth of July version of Illuminations to enjoy a little extra red, white, and blue for the American holiday.
But we happily celebrate our friends in France as well… especially since they provide us with so much culinary fun on our trips around World Showcase!

The red, white, and blue Macaron is probably not for the 4th of July but for Bastille Day on July 14th.
The French National Day commemorates the beginning of the French Revolution.

We shouldn’t forget to mention that July 14 is Bastille Day–France’s version of Independence Day! That’s probably the reason for the creation of the Vanilla Macaron Ice Cream Sandwich.

This place has turned into a must-do for our upcoming trip. My biggest problem is going to be deciding what to get- everything looks fantastic!

How perfect for upcoming Bastille Day too! Thanks for highlighting such a fun treat, Wendy!

I think look like cute yoyos for the July 4th holiday! I’d like to try the chocolate macarons with vanilla ice cream; that would be a attempting combination for me.
Nikki says
Are these available just for the month of July, or year long?
Kat says
Did the food coloring get on everything? I can just imagine the blue tongue it might give you.

Happy (almost) Bastille Day, everyone :)!
Nikki – Hi! I asked one of the Cast Members, and he said he wasn’t certain how long it would be available. As of right now, he could only say they’ll be available until at least through mid-late July (for several days beyond Bastille Day), but also said there is a possibility of continuation.
Kat – That’s a great question, because I went to wash my hands after eating it — the food coloring did get on my fingers (everyone will be able to keep the wrapping around it, so it won’t be a problem for most, but I needed to have it without the wrap for the pictures :). So, I was somewhat dreading my reflection in the mirror ;), wondering if my mouth would be covered in blue and red (or, purple all together!). There was some color, but it wasn’t really that bad, I was surprised! I’ve had more “colorful” experiences in that way with blue beverages, so I was expecting something much more intense.

These look wonderful! I make macarons on a regular basis and never thought of an ice cream filling. So excited! Can you give me an idea of how big these are? 3″ across? I think I need to try to make some of these since its 15 months until I get to visit Disney World again.
