A couple of months ago I got an email from a reader — Callie Shrekengost — urging me to try the Black Forest Cupcake at Contemporary Resort’s Contempo Cafe in Disney World. I’d seen the cupcake before, but hadn’t ever had the stomach space at the time to try it; so I was grateful to get her reminder and put it on my To-Do list for the October trip!
So, here we have a chocolate cupcake topped with swirls of vanilla buttercream frosting. The thing is simply massive — ginormous — and could easily be shared! On the very tippy top of the cupcake is a chocolate-covered cherry (how can you NOT love that?!).
But we haven’t even gotten to the intriguing part yet… . It’s called a Black Forest Cupcake because it’s stuffed with…
Cherry Pie Filling!!!
Now, I know we may not know each other in person, but you have to know I love cherry pie filling, right? And I’m talking about the stuff out of the can — not some homemade version. Good old, bright red, gelatinous cherry pie filling from the grocery store shelf. Like a little piece of heaven.
Now, this cupcake has its pros and cons. Clearly, the pros include the cherry pie filling and chocolate covered cherry on top. Cons? Not enough frosting; plus, the frosting that is there is a bit too thin. While it doesn’t have the taste of whipped cream, the consistency is similar. I prefer heavier, lardier frosting to this type. It doesn’t beat the Butterfinger Cupcake (my standard against which all other Disney cupcakes are compared), but I’ll still give it a 7 out of 10!
Stay tuned for the Contempo’s other cupcake — the Dulce de Leche cupcake — in a future post!

This one looks good! I actually prefer cupcakes to have less frosting. Some of the ones you can get at Disney have a big ole glob right on top…It’s too much for me. I’ll have to try this out on our next trip 🙂

Griffin — You can save all of your extra frosting and fedex it to me!! 🙂

Why have cupcakes not yet been declared a major food group???
AJ says
Jeff C — This is an excellent question!

Ahhh too many delicious-looking cupcakes, not enough time to try them all! I love Black Forest Cake, and you’re right, there is nothing comparable to that comforting, vividly red, filling.

We’ll be heading to the resorts soon to check out all the holiday decorations…I’m definitely seeing a stop here in my future!

Winner!!! Why? Chocolate covered cherry!!!

I started to want to try this item when I saw it being featured here. Normally, the exterior would be too blah to interest me. However, you lost me at “cherry filling.” The combination of chocolate and cherry just doesn’t do it for me – I know that black forest usually signifies that combination. If that were a hazelnut mousse filling with that same black and white exterior, I’d be willing to try it.

So many cupcakes to try at WDW. I bought a black forest muffin at 7 – Eleven one night after work. It was the best muffin I ever had. I was so looking forward to getting another and they haven’t had them since (or at least not when I stop there). I have an ADR at Chef Mickey’s in November. Perhaps I need to stop and get one of these cupcakes to fill the void.

I went to get this amazing looking cupcake today but I was sadly out of luck. The Contempo Cafe no longer has this cupcake in rotation. They said they will still make it for you by request but it takes two days to get it. So if you are wanting one of these make sure you get your request in at the beginning of your trip! They will have their bakery make it for you but again, it takes two days to get it.
