When Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opens at Disney’s Hollywood Studios on August 29, we certainly expect the park experience to change in many ways. Now, we’re getting a first look at those changes!
We previously discovered that FastPass+ tiers at Disney’s Hollywood Studios may be changing, and now we’ve been able to see the changes for ourselves!
Starting August 29, Toy Story Mania!, Slinky Dog Dash, Alien Swirling Saucers, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, AND The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror will all be Tier 1 attractions.
All other attractions will remain in Tier 2, including Beauty and the Beast – Live on Stage and Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy. Remember that Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run will NOT utilize the FastPass+ system.
If you plan to visit Disney World this fall, don’t forget about the EXTRA Extra Magic Hours! From September 1-November 2, guests staying at a resort with the Extra Magic Hours benefit will get EMH at 3 parks per day! If you can’t snag a FastPass+ reservation for all your priority attractions, you might plan to knock out some of the more popular attractions during Extra Magic Hours. Everyone will likely be in Galaxy’s Edge during Extra Magic Hours, so this could be a great time to ride Slinky Dog Dash or Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster.
Check out our Extra Magic Hours strategies here!
I don’t know about you, but I’m more than ready for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge to open in Hollywood Studios!

And how does this enhance the customer experience?? TSM, SDD, RNR, and TOT will all be 2+ hour waits. SO basically I will get to stand in line for most of the day and get to experience 4-5 rides OR I can get up at the crack of dawn on my hard-earned and uber expensive vacation and rush to the parks at rope drop. And at the same time, prices keep going up and the quality of park experience goes down. 🙁
Michelle says
The worst! All the Tier 2 attractions (all shows) are ones that never need FastPasses! Do you think this is merely done for even distribution in the parks? Definitely doesn’t seem like a decision Disney made in order to enhance the customer experience.
Alex says
My question is whether this will affect already selected fast passes. Right now-for July-I have both slinky and towers of terror.
Melissa says
So any ride someone wants to do is tier 1 and anything that is usually walk on is up for grabs meaning people will make one fp and stand in a bunch of lines. Yeah that makes sense and will help crowds…in bizarro world. Get them on the rides and gone, don’t make the lines longer. Do those coming uo with this stuff ever visit the parks? Cause no one who has would think this was a good idea.
DFB Sarah says
Alex, you should be fine. I’ll confirm.
Craig says
Sad that they have more T1 rides than T2, yet you still have to use all three of your FP before you can book a 4th, even in another park. Expect those early Indy shows to be packed.
Mel says
Seriously so upset about this. We will never be able to ride the attractions we want without having to wait in LONG lines. Angry!!
Liza says
This is awful! I don’t understand how this helps any crowds. It seems like all wait times will be super long. They should still have some rides in tier 2 status.
Brandy says
I was so excited to be able to get fast passes for Rockn Roller Coaster, Slinky and TOT in Jan so now I’m super disappointed.
Teri says
So glad we are leaving Aug 24 and not have to deal with this. Disney is pricing itself out of average family budgets, getting greedy and ridiculous with their tiers.
JG says
TERRIBLE! The days of being a Passholder after 20 years is slowly fading away. Disney cares very little about their clientele anymore.
Joan Spengler says
Do you know when, if ever, Galaxy’s Edge will accept FP? We are going in late December.
Mickey says
The shows have had long lines before too. There have been times when I couldn’t get a fastpass for Little Mermaid or the Frozen sing along. I had to stand in over an hour plus long lines, and it wasn’t always at holiday times. Also, I prefer to Fastpass Fantasmic so I don’t need to sit for 45 minutes beforehand to get a good seat.
What will the new Mickey and Minnie ride be considered?

I really hate the Star Wars Experience is causing Disney execs to re-think what was working well. Maybe they are trying to get people to go to other parks & avoid HS during the early days & weeks of SW opening?!
Jacqueline says
I’m really frustrated by this change. It seems like all of the good rides are tier 1 and all of the attractions that I don’t really want to see are tier 2. For our upcoming vacation I was going to go to Hollywood studios for 3 days so that I could ride the three tier 1 rides that I wanted however now there’s even more tier 1 rides and I’m not going to spend my entire vacation going to Hollywood studios. I’m also wondering what’s going to happen with Galaxy’s Edge since I’m going at the busiest time of the year, Christmas! I’m very frustrated by a lot of the changes Disney has been making lately and it’s making me fall out of love with Disney, which I never thought I’d say.
Faith Lockhart says
So basically you can only get a fastpass for one ride in the whole park? I don’t really care about the stage shows as an adult and don’t need fastpasses for those. That kind of blows.
Gina says
Jacqueline,
I fully agree with you. I am rethinking future visits. There is just to much change too fast and all are things I am not as interested in. Because the price just keeps going up, I do not feel it is worth it as much now.
VIRGINIA A BENNETT says
All I can say is that this sucks.
Nicole says
This IS ridiculous! How can you have more tier 1 attractions than tier 2? We love DHS and chose EPCOT area resorts to be close but we may not even bother with it next trip. My teens and husband aren’t interested in going to sing a longs & shows. They want thrill rides! Maybe Universal is the place to go to get a reasonable number of Express Passes for what you want to actually do
Kathy says
disney in the past few years has changed and not necessarily for the better. We have been going since my 50 year old daughter was 10 and continued going every year when my first granddaughter was born. Over the years we have seen prices skyrocket every year . It used to be a wonderful place for families to spend time together, but it is now a money making business and the cost for a family of 4 is unbelievable.
Sherry says
As frustrating as this is, I do understand the reasoning. There are many “inexperienced” guests who miss out on any decent fast passes because they have all been claimed by those of us who know how to work the system. These people end up in stand by lines that are longer due to all the people with fast passes. Now they will have a shot at getting at least one decent fast pass themselves.
Helen tipper says
Do we know if this is a temporary measure for galaxy’s edge opening or is this long term now? I don’t visit again till August 2020 & I’m hoping it might change by then??
DFB Sarah says
Helen, the tiers haven’t been given a timeline, so we’ll have to see what happens!
DFB Sarah says
Mickey, not sure about that. When it gets closer to opening season for the ride, we’ll update.
DFB Sarah says
Joan, we haven’t heard yet, but we will post when we do!
Kim Hamilton says
It’s ridiculous that there are more options in Tier 1 than in Tier 2. I could understand if the Star Wars attractions became Tier 1 when they add them to the tier selections, but moving so many rides to Tier 1 doesn’t make sense. I’m sure that M&M Runaway Railway will also be Tier 1 when it 1st opens simply because of the newness factor, if nothing else. I’m hoping they will rethink this, or maybe even go to no tier system like MK.
Craig says
Our 60 day fast pass date is 5th August. Will we be restricted with this new fast pass system?
Tamsin says
Do you think that when rise of the resistance opens, HS might change their tier system to how AK operates? So galaxy’s edge will be tier 1 and everything else tier 2?
DFB Sarah says
Craig, we would expect so, unless Disney decides to change the system again.
JJ says
Too bad! This is a major bummer. Hope Disney reads reviews like this.
