Recently, we shared with you a recipe Disney had released for a “frozen pineapple treat.” Of course they expect us to believe that this is the famous Dole Whip. 😉
It should come as no surprise that our readers LOVE Dole Whip. It won the ultimate Snack Throwdown, after all! But we couldn’t help but notice that something was a bit…off when we looked at Disney’s recipe. So we decided to make sure you had an AUTHENTIC recipe…as well as another totally vegan option…and cover all our “DIY Dole Whip” bases!
Did you know that Dole Whip served in the parks is actually vegan AND gluten-free? The recipe Disney recently shared — using ice cream — isn’t vegan at all. And it isn’t what’s served in the parks.
So we thought we would share two other step-by-step ways you can make Dole Whip at home (you want ALL your options, right?). We have the ingredients and tools you’ll need to whip up your very own “frozen pineapple treat” in a jiffy!
One of these recipes is authentic and will get you exactly what’s served in the parks. The other recipe is much easier, and still vegan, but isn’t what’s served in the parks.
Please note that while we found these ingredients at the locations below, the current availability of some of these products may vary depending on where you live and when you’re reading this!
Method #1: Roll Up Your Sleeves (But Only a Little)
Ingredients
This first method has a few ingredients and tools involved, but the end result is delicious! Now this is the easy-but-not-authentic-but-still-vegan option. It’s basically pineapple flavored banana soft serve. But it IS vegan so if you’re looking to get closer to Dole Whip than the recipe Disney shared, look no further!
- 1 cup pineapple juice
- 1 banana
- 2.5 tsp confectioners sugar
- 1/2 cup coconut milk
Directions
- Separate 1 cup of pineapple juice into ice cube trays and freeze
- Freeze 1 banana, sliced
- Combine frozen pineapple juice, banana, and 2 1/2 teaspoons confectioner’s sugar in a blender.
- Cover and blend until smooth, gradually adding in your coconut milk and scrape down the sides if necessary.
- Serve immediately and enjoy!
To start, you’ll need one cup of pineapple juice, poured into ice cube trays and frozen. You will also want to slice and freeze one banana (we put ours in a ziptop baggie).

Dump your frozen goodies in a blender and add 2 1/2 teaspoons of confectioner’s sugar! We mentioned this was a frozen SWEET treat, and this is where the real sweetness comes in! If your pantry is currently running low on confectioner’s sugar, we got you covered:
Pick up a box of Confectioner’s Sugar here!
Finally, for the liquid, the recipe calls for 1/4 to 1/2 cup coconut milk, depending on how thick you want your Dole Whip to turn out!

Blend this up and in seconds you should have a soft-serve sweet treat not TOO unlike the real thing! Except it’ll taste mostly like banana. 🙂
Tools
Don’t got all the gear needed to make this treat? No sweat! We pulled some of our favorite tools to get you whipping in no time! 😉
For the pineapple juice, you’ll need some ice cube trays to separate it out and freeze it! We have some fun options for you to choose from! The first is this colorful set of ice cube trays for $10.99:

Method #2: “Set It and Forget It”
Ingredients
This is the REAL DEAL, folks. It doesn’t get more authentic than REAL Dole Whip mix. The main ingredient you’ll need for this method of creating Dole Whip is provided by Dole themselves! They actually sell pineapple soft serve mix online. Note that these are larger bags, so be prepared to make LOTS of Dole Whip (which we totally endorse). The only other ingredient you’ll need is cold tap water, and that’s it! This is exactly what happens backstage at your favorite Disney Dole Whip location.
Follow the instructions on the bag and you’ll be on your way to pineapple paradise in no time!

Tools
This method of making your very own Dole Whip requires very little effort, but requires more unique kitchen equipment. For this method, you’ll need an ice cream maker. You can pick one of them up for less than $100 (and then imagine all the ice cream you can make at home once you have it!).

We made version 1 last night as party of our weekend Disney staycation and it was terrific. It was easy and terrific. (We do have a Vita-Mix.)
It’s good you showed that the coconut milk is the beverage, not the thick high fat stuff that comes in a can. We actually had soy milk on hand and it worked fine.

I have a bag of the real Dole Whip powder and an ice cream maker. The hardest part is to figure out the proper proportions of water to powder to fit in a home ice cream maker.
Rob says
Can DFB pull their strings and get disney to release chicken wing recipe at the Wave? Omg, I am missing the best wings ever. Great job on still posting content! Thanks!
DFB Sarah says
Thanks, Rob! Sadly, there are no strings to pull. 😉

This looks so yummy!

What orange drink do they use in the orange dole whip
Brandon says
Ope. We tried a couple different recipes today. They were all terrible.
Watery
NOTHING like the real Dole Whip.
The only way to do it is to find one of the Dole Whip mixes and have a soft serve machine.
Otherwise you will ALL be sorely disappointed.
DDS says
Found the easiest way to enjoy authentic Dole Whip, without taking a trip to WDW. We have a local ice cream shop that uses the authentic mix, and a soft serve machine!! YUM! 😋🍦
Rosalie says
If your attempt at making either recipe failed it’s because you didn’t follow the instructions or use the right ingredients. My children made both recipes and both were near perfect. I’m waiting on my Dole mix to arrive from Amazon so we can see how close the taste is.
Merida says
I have a 4 cup capacity Cuisinart (electric) ice cream maker and purchased the Dole Whip mix from Amazon. I made my first batch last night with the following measurements as the directions on the bag are for the whole bag at one time! 3 cups of cool water and 1 cup plus 1 1/2 teaspoons of the powered mix. Gradually add mix to water whisking to dissolve. Pour into the frozen ice cream container. Attach the paddle and cover. Turn on and allow to mix for 15 – 20 minutes depending on how cool the water was. It turned out just like the Dole Whips at Pineapple Lanai. Enjoy!
Jessie says
I bought the powdered mix online but the directions on the bag are for making the whole bag. I tried to make a small batch today but it came out like a slushy. The taste was exactly like dole whip; just the wrong consistency. I think we used too much water. We used 8oz mix on a kitchen scale mixed with 2 cups water till dissolved and then 2 more cups ice water

I think my son will love dishes. I will try to make all. Thanks you!

I thought I loved the Dole Whip I have been eating all these years, but I think it was all the Disney magic that influenced my love for the treat.
When I made my own at home, using the real Dole Pineapple Soft Serve Mix, in my soft serve machine, it tasted exactly like the Dole Whips I have been eating since was a kid. I just didn’t like it. It was too sweet and cloying, there is a quality to it that I had never noticed previously, which is still hard to describe, other that artificiality. Then I bothered to read the label, and it is mostly sugar, and stabilizers. Well sugar is sugar, but the list of stabilizers is not that appetizing: Cellulose Gum, Xanthan Gum, Locust Bean Gum, Guar Gum and Karaya Gum. I know the stuff is vegan, but I don’t know a vegan, vegetarian, or just people that eat healthfully that would choose to ingest this much non food. The next ingredient is coconut oil, which, fine, and then very small amount of some natural and artificial flavors, and color, and more artificial chemicals…
It must just be the overwhelming heat and exhaustion that effects by perception of the Dole Whip when I am in a park, that makes it palatable, and loved. But I think I will be steering clear of the Sunshine Terrace in future visits to WDW.
At home I am going to have to try the healthier copy cat recipes that are floating around, one can’t go wrong with frozen pineapple chunks, coconut milk, and THEN some sugar. Some people are worried about getting vaccines, but they have no problem filling their bellies with artificial food, huh.

I’ve never been there but I just made this with blueberries and OMG soooooooooo good!

I’ve never had one of these, I might have to try this recipe!

Does anyone have the recipe for the orange dole whip from the Sunshine Terrace just down a little bit from where you buy the pineapple whip? I’m a fan of the original orange dole whip! I LOVE IT!!!
Dandre says
Wow! That looks so creamy and delicious! I would love to go to Disneyland someday, I watched the video, and it looked so fun!
Ana Feeney says
I made this while my mom went to some 80’s party, and she came back and was so surprised! This was so quick and easy, and there was no need for anything special! This is just as good as store bought ice cream! Thanks so much!
Felipa says
That’s amazing information. I have to save it on my wall. Thanks for sharing and love your site.
Stephen McKee says
Here’s a “hack” method for getting very close to a Dole Whip with just 2 ingredients! In the frozen section of your grocery store, get a bag of frozen pineapple chunks. Also get coconut milk. In a blender, fill 2/3rds of it with the frozen pineapple chunks, and pour in the coconut milk up to about the 2/3rds mark (you may have to experiment with more/less to get the similar Dole Whip consistency). Blend up, spoon out, and enjoy! It’s very close to the original…maybe not quite as creamy, but in my opinion still does the trick. And just 2 ingredients!
Kenny says
This tasted JUST like when we get it at Disney!! My kids and I THANK YOU!!
Gwyneth says
What machine did you use to make the soft swirl effect?
DFB Sarah says
Gwyneth, I don’t think we did get a swirl; if I find out otherwise, I’ll update.
Scott Cooper says
Your recipe is ALMOST vegan. It calls for confectioners sugar which is usually made from refined cane sugar (like the brand you promote near the recipe). The refining process uses bone char, an animal byproduct.
I’d suggest replacing the sugar with a vegan sweetener like agave syrup, or specify a vegan confectioners sugar and update the product you link to to a vegan brand.
PS don’t use honey as many consider it non vegan since it comes from an animal.
DFB Sarah says
Thanks for the tips, Scott!
Herb Sumrall Jr says
For a 1.5 qt. ice cream machine use 7/8 cup Dole Whip mix, and 3 cups water.
Process for 30 minutes and transfer to freezer containers to firm up a bit more (30 minutes). Perfect Dole Whip!
Over time the remaining Dole Whip will become harder and more icy in the freezer, but it’s still delicious.
