Now that Disney World is planning on reopening some of its hotels as early as next month while its theme parks will be opening later in July, we have SO MANY questions!
And while we already know Disney World Resort will be requiring guests and Cast Members to wear face masks at all times except when dining, will we have to wear one at the pool?
According to Disney World’s website, all guests ages two and up must wear face coverings when visiting Disney World Resort and guests must supply their own masks. But rather interestingly, their website is now stating face covers can be removed when dining or swimming. [Editor’s UPDATE: As of May 28th Disney has updated their mask policy; the current policy is that face coverings will be required for all Guests ages 2 and up, and we have updated the text in this paragraph accordingly.]
Keep in mind Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach are expected to remain closed even after the Disney World theme parks reopen, but this will be good information to keep in mind in case you want to visit the pool at your Disney World Resort.

Not requiring face coverings to be worn while swimming is in keeping with CDC guidelines. According to the CDC, they “advise those wearing face coverings to not wear them in the water. Cloth face coverings can be difficult to breathe through when they’re wet.”
Disney hasn’t shared much information on the reopening of their pools. We will continue to keep you posted on face coverings and information regarding the hotel’s public pools as it is released.

Will you feel comfortable swimming in a Disney World resort pool when the hotels reopen? Let us know in the comments below!
Georgine says
Yes I would feel comfortable in the pools. And I think masks should be optional while outdoors. If indoor shops of course where it otherwise no
Sharon says
We have 2 trips planned to Disney this year but will be canceling until this mask requirement is lifted.
Pris says
“Not required to wear a mask while swimming”? Seriously? Why would that even be necessary to say? Let’s add some common sense to these decisions.
James says
Masks should be worn only when shopping in stores , in a theater, riding on buses/monorails, in door non-exhilarating rides or when guest want to. All out door activities should be excluded. Has anyone TRIED to keep a mask, in the heat, on a small child?!?!? This is crazy.
I understand there are risks associated with visiting Disney. Do we wear a mask against any other disease like flu or measles???
Jack Anderson says
Mask should be optional everywhere. Vacation is supposed to be fun. Wearing a mask is not fun. We will not visit Disney until the mask is no longer required.
Tricia says
Does anyone know when face masks will no longer be required? Just recommended or optional? I know many people don’t mind it and if they want to go with a mask that’s fine… I’m just waiting until the restrictions are lifted. So do we have any idea WHEN that will be?
DFB Sarah says
Tricia, unfortunately we do not know when or if. We will certainly update this info when/if things change.
Kimberly Blauch says
Does anyone know how the resorts will determine how guests will use pool time? Says number of people in pool and on pool deck will be monitored- so how do they decide who has to leave- who gets to stay? I’m going in July but I don’t want to be told when I can use pool and when I must leave pool! That’s not a vacation- especially when parks will not be open!
Amy Beall says
Will face masks be required when lounging by the pool (sunbathing)? The policy seems a little vague to me
DFB Sarah says
Amy, what we were told on-site when Resorts opened last week is that masks can be removed while in the pool and while at your seat. Seats are spaced out for physical distancing. If you’re walking around the pool area, they’re requesting masks be worn.
Hilary says
I’m going to Disney in a few days and I def wouldn’t want to wear a mask anywhere but especially not in a pool! And I don’t care how many people are in there . It’s outdoors and it should be up to people to have freedom of choice. No one is forced to go swimming if they don’t want to
