The NBA will be starting its season on July 30th at Disney World’s ESPN Wide World of Sports!
Players and officials will be staying on property at different Disney Resorts in areas that are isolated from regular guests (but with swoon-worthy amenities). Training courts have already started to be set up inside the hotels, along with fencing down the middle of places like Disney’s Floridian Resort to separate the NBA from resort guests!
Although we’ve had a sneak peek of the big blue wall that has started to form at the Grand Floridian, we got a better look at just HOW LONG and BIG this fencing is going to be.
Although the fencing at first looked like it would be in a few spaces to separate sections of the resort, the blue wall stretches across the expanse of the Grand Floridian literally splitting the property into two sections.
Since the NBA will be playing its games through the middle of October, the fencing may stay up through the Fall as well. At the moment, guests are able to stay at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort with previous reservations in the areas the NBA WON’T be occupying. We haven’t heard word from Disney if things might change a bit at the hotels the NBA is staying at once the teams start arriving.
These walls are BIG, y’all. They completely wipe out the view of the Magic Kingdom from the main building. We were able to JUST spot the tippy-top of the highest spire of Cinderella Castle from Gasparilla Island Grill (normally, you have a nice clear view of the castle when leaving this spot!). We’ve got to admit, it’s a bit jarring to walk out the back of the main Grand Floridian lobby and be hit with a wall of blue stopping you in your tracks!
While we’ll be keeping an eye on the NBA’s plans and any official word from Disney about how the resorts will be affected, we will keep you updated on any new details!
Take a look at these awesome NBA and Disney mash-ups!

Im really against Disney letting all these sports teams in to take over the property, bringing with them who knows what in terms of the virus. I think its terrible regular guests have to pay such huge sums of money for this resort when they have gone and ruined it this way, I sure wouldnt stay there.

Disney is becoming a playground for the rich and privileged classes. If you’re not a local, it won’t be worth it to stay there.

It seems to me that they are providing preference to the pro sports teams over regular families. I always thought of Disney World as a family place. Apparently, they will sell out to the highest bidder and the heck with their advertised values. Shame on them.

What’s with the bright blue? Disney is usually better at making things blend in. A fence that matched the roof color would have looked much better.

I don’t know how lucrative this is for Disney, but the amount of work occurring and impacts to properties to host the NBA seems to make it a very questionable decision. More importantly it impacts the experience for paying guests. Having site lines blocked at deluxe resorts is an unacceptable outcome. Considering that several teams have ceased operations at their own facilities due to positive COVID tests, the risk is way too high for Disney. Finally, I don’t think anyone cares about the NBA season at this point considering it would have normally concluded by now.

We had waited years to stay at Grand Floridian. Reservation is for September. Now we are cancelling because of the NBA and Disney cutting the resort in half. I officially hate the NBA and Disney!

I sure wouldn’t want to stay there with the ugly blue wall. They really ought to just choose one of the other resorts, such as the Four Seasons, to house all the teams so they don’t have to ruin the view for the other paying guests.
