We’re just a few short days away from the reopening of Disney’s Hollywood Studios on July 15th.
We know we’re not alone when we say we’re pretty excited to ride Rise of the Resistance in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge again. Initially, Disney had announced that the Virtual Queue would NOT be returning. However, Disney just announced that Rise of the Resistance WILL be using a MODIFIED Virtual Queue when Hollywood Studios reopens.
Unlike the ride’s previous virtual queue system that gave guests inside the theme park one opportunity, at park opening, to join a Boarding Group, the new Virtual Queue will give guests an opportunity to request to join the queue at 10AM, 1PM, or 4PM using the My Disney Experience app. Keep in mind, guests will need to have valid park admission and a Disney Park Pass reservation so that they can be INSIDE Hollywood Studios to attempt to join.
To join the Virtual Queue, you will need the My Disney Experience app. Log in to the app at one of the queue times — 10AM, 1PM, or 4PM — and select “Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance Virtual Queue” from your home screen. This screen will show you the current status and next steps for joining the queue.
Once you’ve joined, make sure you have push notifications turned on for the app so you know when your group is called to ride. You’ll have up to one hour to return to the attraction from the time that your group is called.
The app will show if there is no availability and guests may be able to join back-up boarding groups for a chance to ride the attraction later. Remember, a spot in the Virtual Queue does NOT guarantee that you will get to ride.
As long as you have your My Disney Experience account linked to park tickets for you and the rest of your party, you’ll be able to have everyone join the Virtual Queue at the same time. NOTE: Each guest will only be able to join the Virtual Queue ONCE per day — so no re-rides. If at any point you have questions or need some help with the process, you can locate Cast Members at the Guest Experience Team locations around the park.
This comes as a pretty big surprise since Disney had initially said that this would not be happening. Stay tuned to DFB for all of the latest reopening updates!

Are you headed to ride Rise of the Resistance in a reopened Hollywood Studios? Tell us in the comments!
Shayne says
Not sure how I feel about this. This will be our first trip since RotR opened, and it sounds like there’s a possibility we won’t get to ride. But I guess I’m hopeful that with reduced park capacity, we will hopefully get into one of the boarding groups on at least one of the two dats we have park passes for DHS
DFB Sarah says
Shayne, good luck!
Andrew says
Yet another nonsensical move by Disney. It is almost as if they are daring us not to come back by treating us like children. If ever there was a chance to ride Rise more than once, this would be that opportunity. Thanks Disney for killing the magic.
Tom says
Shayne – don’t despair, I think you will be able to go on ROTR. With smaller crowds and more opportunities for the virtual queue, if you’re persistent I think you’ll get on. We went to Disneyland in January and were able to ride five days in a row, and at Hollywood Studios in early March we got in on our one opportunity. Just have everyone in your party linked and ready to click at exactly the right time and you’ll get boarding passes. And it is totally worth the stress.

This is going to upset a lot of people. I booked my trip specifically to bypass the lottery-style virtual queue. Now I am under 30 days so I cannot cancel without impairing my ability to re-use my points for DVC and losing a good chunk of them. More importantly, if even at this level of reduced attendance they cannot get this ride to work without a virtual queue and if guests cannot have an expectation to ride Rise of the Resistance that matches the level of expectation they have for the rest of the attractions at WDW (meaning not guaranteed but fairly sure they can ride) then I am not sure what the future plan is for this ride. Routinely disappointing most guests visiting a park by barring them from riding the park’s biggest attraction does not sound like good business – especially when that park is WDW’s weakest link.
BK says
So do you actually have to be inside of the park to attempt to get one of these queues? Or could you do it from your hotel room on a day that you have a Hollywood studios park reservation? Or can you do it several days in advance as long as you already have a park pass for Hollywood studios that day? Any information is appreciated; thank you!
Cheryl says
Can you go on the ride before 10 AM? Or is that what time they’re opening the park?
Anthony says
No Booking in advance? You still need to be in the park. And then at opening, time. You can attempt to get a Boarding Pass for one of those three times. Is that correct?
DFB Sarah says
Anthony, the Virtual Queue will open at three different times during the day: 10AM, 1PM, and 4PM — not at Park opening.
DFB Sarah says
Cheryl, for the next several weeks (at least), the Park is opening 10AM to 8PM. So I guess technically that does mean the first round of the Virtual Queue will be activated when the Park opens.
DFB Sarah says
BK, it sounds like the answer is yes, you need to be in the Park.
Hannah says
Do you go to the attraction or just inside Hollywood studios ?
DFB Sarah says
Hannah, you just need to be tapped into the Park.
