Splash Mountain ran into a bit of trouble over the weekend!
After an unexplained closure for a few days, Splash Mountain reopened in Magic Kingdom — but not without a hiccup. Some guests recently reported being inside a Splash Mountain log boat when it SANK! Uh oh! Now, Disney has released a statement.
Over the weekend, Twitter user @skyelaringrsoll tweeted a video of the Splash Mountain ride vehicle where she had just been seated completely submerged below the water.
so we got out of our boat because it was sinking while we were stuck there and the disney world employee decided to tell us that we should’ve stayed in the boat but it went under as soon as we all stepped out… nice #DisneyWorld #splashmountain #MagicKingdom #disney not okay???? pic.twitter.com/15zMnP1wgX

But what did Disney actually do about the employee telling the guests that they should have stayed in the (submerged) boat?? I mean, I understand it could be a safety hazard if it were a different ride, but come on…
Mark Claydon says
Staying they should have stayed in the boat is so silly, something’s it’s obvious when procedures should be ignored
Brandon says
That statement was a complete NON-Statement.
They basically acknowledged that the boat sank and made no other comment.
How about addressing that the cast member was berating the guest because they climbed out of a sunk boat and told them they should have stayed there even after seeing it was under water.
How about making a statement about that?
Carly says
Disney rides have sensors everywhere which is why I’m assuming they were told to remain INSIDE the boat while the ride was still shutting down … and I also understand their very normal instinct to jump the heck out! I do wonder if the sudden loss of weight in the boat could’ve messed up the shutting down process.
Hannah says
Disney should have apologized. Those people could have died!🤦
FRANCIS GALLO says
Thanks for the chuckle, Hannah. Actually, I think even the ride itself is protesting the re-theming. 🙂
Pattie says
I don’t think the guest could have died I’m sure Disney isn’t happy about what happened and sure that they did all that they can to make up for what happened Disney doesn’t want the quest to leave with a bad experience at one of the many times that we ha e been to Disney a few years ago I became ill and Disney took very good care of me we have seen them do other things to make park guest more happier
John Rieker says
a number of years ago a person with developmental issues I believe got out of the log when the ride stopped by the Vultures saying turn around before it’s too late, and died when the ride unexpectedly restarted. Thus the rule, stay on the ride until instructed differently by a cast member. When your log is sinking and you are getting wetter and don’t want to be entirely soaked I can understand abandoning the sinking ship, but what if it HAD started back up after you were half way out and you were caught between the log and the side of the flume? Clearly this was a failure on the side of maintenance and this log should never have been in the Q. I don’t know if he whole story is being told, when did water start coming in? how long was it before it was apparent it was sinking? or was it indeed a very sudden thing, such as a seam opening when the log was hit from behind by a following log. Inquisitive minds want to know.

I think Disney’s maintenance is at its worst and lowest now in the parks, things are just not good and they are cheapening out and not keeping up with things that should be. Its going to take a big bad accident before they do what they should, and that is not how the place should be ran. There have been too many issues even before the pandemic stacking up and its now apparent how bad things are. We cant even have the peoplemover anymore,,I’ll believe it when I see it in terms of that returning.
Katie says
How do you know Disney didn’t apologize?
Gencha says
@ John Rieker. Your point is valid. The log and ride were still operational and anything could have happened and made the incident worse. If they were all standing and the log was hit from behind they could have fallen and become fatalities from hitting their head, a beam or being crushed by additional bumps from other logs. I understand their panic and feel the need to exit the ride, too. It is one of those things, an accident, which could have been much worse than getting wet. It is one of those things that you are slammed if you do, slammed if you don’t. (changed the terms to keep it neat). Glad that everyone was okay.
Faith says
I would have gotten out since the boat clearly stopped moving because The next boat to come behind them could have rolled right over their boat.. with them in it. And I’m not sure how these things are powered but is there no concern for electric shock?
Cal says
I’ve been a Disney fan and even a dvc member, but everytime I have gone back to Disney in the past few years and since Disney themselves aren’t running the parks and having outside companies take the rains. It seems that Disney quality has gone down. I’ll still love Disney, but wonder where the Disney quality has gone
Their more worried about how much money they can get. Instead of Walts dream of people coming to that very magical place. It has become a wall to wall, shoulder to shoulder kind of place.
