The parks have been open for a month now, but not everything has reopened in Disney World.
When you head into the parks, you’ll see lots of Cast Members back at work and doing their best to bring the Disney magic to guests. But some Cast Members have yet to be called back as attractions, restaurants, and entire resort hotels remain closed.
With the robust additional unemployment benefits from earlier this year expired, and the potential federal replacement as yet unconfirmed, which Disney World employees are still waiting for the call?
When Disney World closed due to the global health crisis, a LOT of Cast Members were left out of work. Though Disney was able to pay full-time Cast Members for several weeks, they ultimately furloughed tens of thousands of Cast Members in April through a series of union agreements.
This move successfully helped to preserve Disney’s financial security but, for a large number of Cast Members, this was and remains to be a time of uncertainty. We’ve written at length about what Cast Members have experienced during this process if you want to learn more.
In June, the first Cast Members were called back from the furloughs and several rounds of recalls have occurred since as more of the Walt Disney World Resort reopens. Now, while many Cast Members have returned to work, there are still thousands of Disney World’s 70,000 Cast Members who remain furloughed.
The majority of housekeeping and food and beverage Cast Members are still furloughed.
According to WFTV, Unite Here Local 737 reported that 7,000 of 18,000 housekeeping, food, and beverage Cast Members were called back as of the parks reopening — approximately 39%. Since then, it’s possible that more Cast Members have been recalled, but over half of these workers could still be furloughed.
Of Disney’s 21 resort hotels, 13 are currently operating at varying levels of capacity. Some of these resorts are fully open, offering all forms of guest accommodations, while others are only offering Disney Vacation Club rooms at this time. There are currently five upcoming full hotel reopenings officially delayed by Disney, and the remainder of resort hotels are closed at this time.
When you put that into perspective, it explains why so many housekeeping and food and beverage Cast Members remain furloughed.
On the food and beverage front, of over 400 Disney World restaurants and experiences, over 300 are still listed as temporarily unavailable on the Disney World website. Hours have also been shortened for many dining locations and parks as a whole, so significantly fewer Cast Members are needed to run food and beverage right now.

Some attractions Cast Members are still furloughed.
Some attractions Cast Members remain furloughed but not nearly the proportion that remain furloughed in housekeeping and food and beverage. For attraction and custodial workers with the Local 362 Union, more than 80% headed back to work when the parks reopened.
The majority of attractions are open in the parks, so the need for more Cast Members is much higher in the attractions department. Those who remain furloughed can likely blame the attractions that are still closed and the shortened park hours.

When will these Cast Members return?
It’s likely that more Cast Members will be called back in housekeeping and food and beverage as the remaining closed Walt Disney World resort hotels reopen over the next couple of months. It’s unclear how many Cast Members will be called back for each reopening, but if a fair portion of the current 7,000 Cast Members called back were assigned to the hotels, then we may see thousands more Cast Members called back by the time most of the hotels are open.
For attractions, Cast Members may be called back as more attractions reopen down the line and as Disney lightens capacity limits — that is IF Disney lightens capacity limits at all. It’s possible that the current number of open attractions and capacities will be the norm for a long time, meaning Disney may not have a need to call back more attractions Cast Members for the foreseeable future.
We do have to note that Universal Orlando Resort did recently lay off an undisclosed number of workers, per Spectrum News, so we have to keep this in mind as a possibility for Disney World. Similarly, we’ve seen Paddlefish and other on-property restaurants institute lay-offs and change hours based on low demand. Unfortunately, just because some Cast Members are back, that doesn’t mean things will stay that way. There are no guarantees right now.

What are some Cast Member concerns?
The big reason it’s concerning for so many Cast Members to remain furloughed is that the increased unemployment benefits from earlier this year have expired. And the current federal replacement has yet to be confirmed.
Some folks have had trouble getting unemployment benefits at all due to significant difficulties in dealing with the Florida unemployment system. So many Cast Members that have had to work hard to get unemployment benefits in the first place are now faced with reduced benefits — with no promise of if/when they’ll be called back for work.
Overall, keep in mind that Cast Members are dealing with a bit of a rollercoaster through this reopening. So, for those who HAVE returned to the parks to work, please be kind. And keep in mind that there are many, many more currently not able to work right now as well. Entertainment related CMs are still off too, as well as those at experiences like BBB. It’s a sad and scary time for all of us still on furlough, and unfortunately a lot of CMs have had to leave Orlando because they can’t afford rent.

You also failed to mention the hundreds of bus drivers waiting to be called back…and I’m one of ‘em.

Thank you so much for your call to be kind! It is amazing that guest forget CMs are people with real lives outside of the resorts. My daughter is already back to work and I am still waiting. It has worked out for us. She does come home with horror stories of nasty guest. The increda-crew, the yellow shirts that walk around reminding you to wear a mask, have to walk in pairs now, for their own safety. One of them came into her location and said, “ well, I have been here two hours now and been called every name in the book, and flipped off more times than I can count”.
It is shocking to me that people think this is okay behavior. The guest is the one that chose to come (which we do appreciate) but please follow the rules happily, it is your choice.
Thanks and Have a magical day!

My wife and I were at Animal Kingdom on Monday, the 17th. Our first ride is always Safari if we are there early enough. At 9am, the wait time was 10 min. I use a walker [ old fart ,you know?] so after a straight walk up we went over to the right to wait. The time was somewhat extended due to cleaning of the vehicle. However the wait was worth it!! We boarded all by ourselves and boy did that change the experience! Our driver was Carrie and having just the two of us let her talents shine out. The vehicle in front of us had assorts of delays[ legal ,not just because] And during those intervals, we heard more facts and tidbits then we EVER did with a normal or reduced passenger load. She set the tone for the rest of the day and that was , don’t worry be happy. I will pass on one from Carrie which is that the original translation for the giraffe was ———ready? Camel in a leopard skin!!! Have a magical day, I do every one.

I will make it my business to say hello and wave to EVERY CM I can when I’m there in October. I only wish I could hug them and thank them for doing their best to share the Disney Magic under these circumstances. I have been diagnosed with clinical depression and this upcoming Disney trip will be the best medicine for me at this time. I am fortunate that I have a loving partner to care for me, as well as lots of savings (I planned for this financially for a long time) to still be able to afford this trip.

what’s going on behind the scenes to?? how are they dealing with the countless number of imagineers? Those that are involved with intake and training of new cast members. I don’t see people lining up to buy into DVC either… what are those cast members doing?
